Just FYI, Jairam did not attend the public schools....He is currently a student at the Alternative School for Math and Science (a charter middle school that serves Steuben and Chemung counties, with about 130 students). It isn't cheap - tuition is $12,000/academic year! And I believe he went to the Montessori elementary, but I'm not sure.

Interesting.....Not to sidetrack things, but do you know if things worked out in regards to the Finn Academy charter school in West Elmira?
I'm wondering if these kids' father and/or mother work at the Corning Glass Science and Technology Center? Brainy kids usually have brainy parents.
I was thinking the same thing and it is likely. I believe that there is a relatively big Asian population(about 17%) in Gang Mills. About 46% of that Asian population is Indian.

Finn Academy opened in the fall of 2015. According to the newspaper story, they have about 200 students in grades K-4, and are located in an old middle school on the side of the city (Ernie Davis). There was some concern about how long the school could use that property, but the most recent news I've seen - from February - indicates they are working out some sort of long-term agreement. Also, that 200-student number seems to be the goal...no concrete enrollment numbers were ever given. I know that it was supposed to be tuition-free, and offer more hours of instruction than the Elmira public schools. Beyond that, not much to report!

ETA: and the Montessori elementary is in Big Flats, between Elmira and Corning.
Thanks and it must be a popular choice for the higher level executives and staff at Corning Inc., CCC, Elmira College and perhaps a few other companies in the area.
