Moving to Sparkill NY very soon and wondering what garbage collection was like? It seems that they require you to use a private carting service for household garbage. Is there anywhere I can drop it off myself?

You must be coming from the real world, Rockland for the most part does not have much in the way of Transfer Stations where you can bring household waste. This link Facilities outlines what is available and the applicable rates which are not cheap. I would have your realtor find out who is servicing the location your moving too and see from them what it costs. Some towns like Clarkstown do the trash pick up and you pay for it through the many taxes you are billed.
Sparkill is in Orangetown. Call Orangetown Town Hall and they will direct you to someone who can answer your questions.
Even though your only option is a private carter, the rate that you pay is the same as everyone else and is set by the Town Sanitation Commission (or whatever its real name is). It is very cheap. They pick up normal garbage twice a week, have curb service (meaning you don't have to drag the barrels to the street), and have bulk once a month at the end of the month. Its customary to tip at christmas. You are not required to use the carter, but if you don't, than you will have to haul your trash somewhere and as said above there are not really any good options for this. All in all, if you can afford to live in Rockland you can afford the carter's rate. Much much cheaper than cable or cell phone, etc. The town also picks up your leaves every fall if you rake/blow them to the curb, and it has mandatory recycling I think once per week.
