Way over here in south western NY, the best beach nearby is at Presque Isle in Erie, PA. I spend a lot of time there each summer, I think it's as close to an ocean beach as you can get from a lake. The sunsets are especially fantastic and because it's a state park, it's free of development.
We frequent the many beautiful state parks. Some have small beaches and other have natural rock swimming areas. We also have a family camp on a small lake. If I want a beach vacation, I get on a plane.
i think for upstaters to travel past what is locally available they are going to go the extra mile ........ i really don't know anyone from upstate who would go to NJ for anything (maybe six flags, pending where you live) ......... if you are western NY there are better parks in northern Ohio
NJ also isn't all that convenient once you get into WNY, the andirondacks, finger lakes, etc ........... so you tend to go just a little bit further to areas that are a little nicer
i know with us the summer was for the pool, the lakes, being outdoors and occasionally hitting an upstate beach ............. winter was for going towards the ocean and usually southward
living in philly for a while it was really different ........ people would flock to the shore by the droves and I did it a couple times as well
really didn't like them - boardwalk was kind of dirty, really developed and a pretty big meathead mentality as opposed to the laid back mentality I like to see at beaches - we ended up going to DE & MD more often than not when we wanted to hit the beach

I agree. We are "spoiled" as far as choices go for beaches in this state and especially upstate. WE spent one summer just traveling from state park to state park on the Finger Lakes and the beaches were beautiful....then there's the Adirondacks and Catskills, Ontario, Erie, the littel finger lakes....we are fresh water rich!
Who knows! Maybe Jim Reith is in fact the only one who lives in the Syracuse area who visits the Jersey Shore. I wrongly assumed Jim Reith represents a demographic in the area that heads down there every year....
It must be Virginia Beach. I've lived here for about 12 years and I swear, there are more NY'ers living here than in NY. A few years back, I bought in a sub-division here in VB- My next door neighbor was from Utica, across the street were two NYC transplants, and two houses down was a Port Jervis native.
If you're coming here on vacation, I would recommend staying in Sandbridge. Much less congestion.
As far as the Jersey shore I guess I am one of those NYers who have not been there. Upstate beaches are much more beautiful, non-populated, and clean. Any beach in Suffolk county is nice. If I want the Jersey shore mentality I will go to Coney Island.
