Question Looking for a commuter friendly area in Orange County

I will be attending the Police Academy in the city and will be traveling upstate, just north of Albany every weekend. I am divorced and have a four year old son who spends 1/2 the time with me. I am looking for an area that has a good school district, & a convienent commute to NYC, & fairly easy access to the thruway. I will be looking to rent for the first year or two. Does anyone have some ideas for me to start looking into.

Also, I would be open to rockland, westchester, & putnam.

P.S. I am moving from Saratoga Springs, NY

Woodbury, Central Valley, Monroe, Harriman are all convenient to the Harriman Train Station which I take into the city. Also look into Middletown, Campbell Hall and Ottisville which I believe all have train stations nearby. If commuting is the most important part of your location, go to njtransit.com and check out the train maps to see areas close to train stations.

You might also want to look at the Shortline Bus service.
