Hi, and welcome! Just a question why are you moving from NC to NY? I have a child with Downs Syndrome and live on Long Island, I do not know about anything for Autism upstate except that I heard near Albany and Rochester there were great special education services. My cousin lives on long Island also, and has 2 children with Autism. She is in the Lindenhurst school district and says they are wonderful, with her children. I also heard that Longwood, Patchogue/Medford are excellent with the programs they provide for Autism. I hope this helps I know how you feel!

Default Boces Is The Best

Hi There,my Names Melinda Im From Longisland "but Just Moved To Upstate New York, the Cost Of Living Is Absolutely Excellent,i Also Have A 6 Year Old Boy Who Is Autistic, very Little Speech Also .... Anyhow "you Really Need To Check Out The Schools Closely, normally When Your Moving To A Certain Location They Offer You A Few Schools Within A Certain Range Of The Location Your Currently Will Be Residing In.. My Son Travels By Bus Approx 45 Mins Away From Home "i Recommend Boces,i Will Recommend It 100% My Son Has Been In A Few Of Those Schools And He Is Doing Excellent,i Live In Central Bridge Ny Im About 35 Mins Away From Albany Going East And Im 35 Mins Away From Cooperstown/ Oneonta Going West! They Offer Other Schools Than Boces "because They Are Less Of A School Expense, and I Realized That When I First Moved Up Here The School District Of My Area Told Me That Boces Had No Openings Until 6 Months, needless To Say I Put Him In Another School And It Was Horrible, awful Atmosphere And Had Some Serious Problems That I Took Him Out Of The School Immediatley, since Hes Been In Boces, hes Doing Excellent Now! So When Do You Plan On Moving? And Do You Know Where Abouts Yet? Are You Originally From North Carolina? Speak To Ya Soon Melinda

Hi I live in CT. I am also thinking of moving to NY . We have land up in Orwell NY. My son is 5 years old and was diagnosed with Autism at 3. We have been having a lot of issues with the services and support in CT. Does Orwell have good services?

Orwell might be in the Pulaski or Sandy Creek SD. Check with those SD's. I know in the Syracuse area, districts like Liverpool, Jamesville-DeWitt, East Syracuse-Minoa, Onondaga Central and Ed Smith on Syracuse's East Side near Syracuse University. My daughter has autism and is in the North Syracuse SD, which has been fine so far.

ekochin,
New York has the second highest per pupil expenditure in the nation at $16,794 (as of 2008)
North Carolina has the 5th lowest per pupil expenditure - approx $7750
What you will likely find is there are a myriad of programs available in NYS, with more quailified and educated teachers and staff than where you are coming from.
If you have the exact area of NY you are moving to, please post it and we might be able to give you additonal info more specific to your exact area.

Where is NY are you moving? As stated before many school districts on Long Island have great programs for autistic children. There are also very good school districts in the suburbs of Albany and the Capital Region, so I'd imagine many schools would have good services there as well.
