we moved up here from Whitestone Queens 11 years ago, and I have hated every minute of it. Aside from the serious aspects, crime, police who dont give a crap ,are both corrupt, unfriendly, indifferent (if you have a problem and want to make a report, same as banging your head against the "brick" wall) secondly, there is nothing to do here for tweens/teens, nor adults who seek any type of cultural, educational facilities. Yet more and more r moving here. I take offense to racial comments ( upper class "white" neighborhoods, also harbor priveledged teens, who drink and drive) so the uneducated commentor should refrain from such remarks! Blame it you the City of NY who stopped section 8 within the boroughs, now the Bronx hoods are moving here. My husband is "Hispantic" served as a officer of NYPD, later NYC corrections. I am a active member in this crappy community attempting to stop stores that openly sell beer to minors ( cops look the other way, cause a 100 bill in hand, well u know where I am going with this) It is corrupt, ugly, housing compared to NY city cheap, so you have to weigh whats more important. The local paper is a joke, schools system horrid, and unless your willing to be a activist, with soap box in tote...do not move here. We are leaving after our son graduates, as the high school is even worst. I see the decline in 11 years!! My contention is there really is no where to hide per se, however one can (if financially fortunate) not move here!. THE all white upper class areas, have their skeletons as well, just thos lily white fences hide it better. In conclussion, If you have a child in school, 86 Middletown, The commute is bad, Forget the bus system, and true crime is on the rise (but ya wont read about it in the local paper)! plus the fact it is a blah town, quite ugly, overprized inner city homes etc. sorry for the lenghly reply. Irish Lass in Middletown wed to a Hispanic........lol cannot chg the world nor people, only your reaction to them. HAGD n happy hunting...I agree with florida bound, you do get what u pay for, then some

Please Do Not Listen To All Theses People I Have Lived In The City Of Middletown For 4 Years. The Schools May Be Bad But There Are People Who Graduate And Go On With There Life It Depends How You Raise Your Child , People Are Going By The Critics Seriously (bull****) Excuse My French. Middletown Is A Great Place, It May Be Boring To The Children But It's Decent. Newburgh Ny Is Very Bad. I Would Rather You Move To Middletown Than Newburgh, And If It's The Schools Your Worried About Send Your Child Somewhere Else. Go To Middletown Stay In A Hotel For About A Week Experience It On Your Own Instead Of Going On The Internet To Read Bull****.
_thanks

Maybe it is great compared to Newburgh but as others pointed out you can live close to Middletown and enjoy the shopping and resturants and then get a much better school. As a parent who would want to get their kids a school that is deficient? Parenting only gets you so far when your child is in a school environment 8 hours a day it has a large influence on who they become wether you like it or not.
I will give you Middletown is much better to live in the PJ or Newburgh but Scotchtown, Goshen and MV are really exceptional places in the HV....and MV can even be a touch cheaper in some areas. You also do not need to lose diversity many of these towns that are spouted as being "snobbish upper class white only" do also have a decent share of minorities that are also sucessful and afford those big 500K homes on 2 acres.
And the schools do not allow bussing last time I knew..if you live in the district you must use the school you are designated. Private school is $$$ then why pay property taxes and school taxes and not even feel compelled to use the school in that district? It is throwing away $$ IMO.

Default Looking for a quiet area...

Not sure anyone would refer to Middletown as a quiet community but ther are quiet communities along the travel path to NYC. Moderator cut: realtor soliciting

I have to agree. I've only lived in Middletwon for 5 years ( no kids) Even I know the schools are horrible, the government is corrupt, and the people are getting worse. We're even looking at leaving in a few years if we can last that long.

I have lived in Middletown since 1982. It has good and bad qualities just like anywhere. Some of the schools are better than others. The School Board now works with the City to resolve some of the issues which has helped. The elementary schools have a more positive reputation than the High School. There are lots of positives happening in spite of all the negative postings. The police force is actually very good. The Chief is thorough so if there is crime they actually catch the perpetrators. Middletown has been going through a cultural transition and there are many more commuters so in essence Middletown is a bedroom community now. Having parents who commute has created a problem because children are left unsupervised. Commutes from this area can take anywhere from 1 1/2 hours - 2 1/2 EACH way. (No matter what realtors may say)
There are nice parks where kids play soccer, football, and baseball, there is a big teen center which offers after school programs (for all ages; not only where children can be tutored by peers, but they have basketball and have also just started a performing arts after school program which keeps expanding. Every Friday night the Downtown Business District offers free concerts in the summer at Festival Square and a Farmers Market on Saturdays. There is a Community College that has good programs that the residents can go to. Communities vary, some are rougher than others but the City has a very active neighborhood watch groups. Like with any community it is the sum total of all of it's parts and often people would rather complain than actually be part of the solution. It is always interesting to see people make comments about "corrupt" government when residents rarely bother to go to city council meetings so it is hard to know what they are basing their opinion on.
Middletown is surrounded by the Town of Wallkill and their sprawl has impacted Middletown by causing more congestion due to the Galleria Mall. Middletown is the home to the Orange County Land Trust a conservancy group that has been preserving some of the beautify farms and more pristine areas in the County. The best way to know if you actually would like an area is to either rent for a month and see what the commute is REALLY like, see if life is quieter and less complicated than where you are in Manhattan.
Hope this helps a little. Sorry that so many people are so negative about the area. Frankly it makes me wish they would move so we can get some people here who care and want to be a part of the community. Lots of older residents have retired to warmer climates and we need families who want to be a part of a community. Often when people move from city settings they are used to a much faster pace and it is difficult for their older children to adjust. Often it seems like there is nothing to do because they are used to a big city.

I have lived in Middletown for 9 years and aslo moved here from New York City. For the kids it is one of the best school district. I have 2 yong children and am very happy to have my kids in nice enviorement and aslo ecologicly clean. If moving to this area try to move to Minisink School District. You will be amaised with the level of education and sport and after school activity offered by Minisink School.

I just moved here from Brooklyn in late October 2007. I have absolutely no regrets. My neighborhood is completely clean and quite. Diverse in population and I look forward to meeting more people as the climate changes. I have been hearing mixed reviews about the city of Middletown, I guess it is contingent on where you live. Don't know much about the school system since my children are beyond HS. Do your research and make your decision based on what you have learned, what you looking for and what you can contribute. Best wishes
