Areas/towns around Cooperstown?
Hey all. Still zeroing on where we're gonna re-locate, and Cooperstown and the towns & villages around it have really got us leaning that way. Any advice/impressions/judgments anyone can offer about any of the towns/villages/rural areas around Cooperstown?
How about Cooperstown itself? We've been there during summer weekends when it's crushed by Baseball Hall of Fame tourists, and in mid-week when it's considerably calmer. Anyone spend a full year there? How bad does the summer tourist season get, and how great are the non-tourist seasons? We've heard its schools are very good and that it's a family-friendly community. True? We like the town (and baseball) a lot, but are definitely considering areas within a good 40-mile radius of it, too.
Thanks, and hope you had a *truly* filling Thanksgiving!

H-U-G-E Baseball fan here. Friends bought property up there about 2 years ago and are just building now. They know very little about baseball and only settled there because of the small-town feel and the scenery. They just like that way of life. Anyway, they've been going up every year for a few weeks for the past 10 years or so. I asked them if they weren't such baseball fans, why would they bother? They told me that it's not all that bad (compared to Long Island, I guess) with all the tourist traffic and what not. They say it's just that one Hall-of-Fame week where traffic can get out of control. The "locals" learn to stay away or find other ways around that week. They also say, that even in the summer, you can walk into the local deli or bakery and everyone will still know you by your first name and they have time to greet you with a warm smile. Hope this has helped at least a little.

Areas around the Coop
hey--I live in the Coop, great area.. BUT...Getting pricy and exposed..Tons of nice, smaller hamlets in the area.. Very safe and better value for real estate..I suggest you look into Hartwick, Laurens , Milford, Oneonta..we have 100 acres, and love the people and seasons...Still any easy drive to NYC when you need a city fix.. Hope this helps you....og

From Cooperstown, where are the closest big supermarkets and movies. Also is it in the "cloud belt", ie Buffalo-Syracuse- Rochester. Or is it sunnier like Albany??

Thanks, Oldguy1!
We've heard these same places around Cooperstown are great, too. Definitely will look into them further (and wish we could move tomorrow!).
What's your opinion of Middlefield and Cherry Valley?
Also, when you say that Cooperstown's prices are escalating fast, what's your guess about a yearly % increase?
Thanks again!

Homeward, pls. do a great deal of research on CV and wind turbines. CV is the middle of a battlefield regarding the placement of 24, 410 ft turbines. This, if it happens, will significantly change the lay of the land, What is now undeveloped and pastural will become barron and industrial. Be wary of Real Estate values, and if you choose to move there, bargin like there is no tomorrow since the future value of an investment is at risk if development goes through. On the positive, CV is looking deeply into developing their OWN wind power for the town. If that happens, your electric costs could be impacted.
Whether you are pro or anti wind turbine, research the exact placement or you may have one in your neighbor's backyard in a few years.

Hi Homeward--Middlefield is gorgeous but pricy.. Good news (so little of THAT lately..!) CV has put a moratorium on the Lg scale wind turbines..It's cheaper, and closer to Albany but sleepy..Artsy though. The Commercial center is Oneonta, so you need to decide how far away from Home Depot etc is acceptable to you! Prices in the Cooperstown school district,,,not delineated by town lines, be careful here....have probably increased 50-150% in the 10 yrs we've been here..Flat now though, a good time to bargin hard!! .....Great school district BTW.. Good Luck.. og
