With the Sabres, I don't know if it is so much Rochester versus parts of Southern Ontario that are minutes from Buffalo. I remember when I was a kid watching a Sabres/Bruins game on WSBK 38(used to get Bruins games on cable TV back in the day), Bruins great Derek Sanderson(a Niagara Falls ON native, if I'm not mistaken) mentioned that there is a substantial amount of Canadians that go to Sabres games. This was in the late 80's when he mentioned this as the Sabres had guys like Phil Housley, Tom Barrasso, Mike Foligno, Ray Sheppard, etc.
I know that Rochester is about 35% of the Sabres Exclusive US TV market, so it must be valuable to the Sabres.
Also at Amerks games probably 40% of jerseys are Sabres Jerseys as opposed to American ones.
I can't find numbers for Rochester STH sales, but I would assume its not insignificant.
I do know for example for the Bills nearly 1/2 of the Suites are bought by people from the Rochester area.
and anyhow putting a team in Rochester would erode what is solid Sabres County like Batavia, Medina, and all those other places between Buffalo and Rochester. Once the Sabres were placed in Buffalo, there was no shot at Rochester getting a team in the same league.

I think a part of seeing a lot of Sabres jerseys at Amerks games is that the Sabres are the parent club for the Amerks and is the closest NHL club to Rochester.
I think the sports teams that Buffalo has is just a good fit due to its location in both cases. With the Bills, it is a once a week event for 8 weeks. That means that you can get attendees from a wide radius. Proximity to Canada helps in regards to hockey.
In using sports, another similarity both have is that they both had NBA franchises. Rochester had the Royals before they moved to Cincinnati, then Kansas City and are now the Sacramento Kings. Buffalo also got the expansion Buffalo Braves in 1970. After the 1977-1978 season, they moved to San Diego and are currently the Los Angeles Clippers. Rochester actually won the NBA championship in 1951 and Buffalo had 3 Rookies of the Year, as well as that franchise's best seasons(1974-1976) before the Clippers won division titles in 2013 and 2014.

I've been to Lowell Loch Monster/Devils and Springfield Thunderbird games, and the places would be full of Bruins jerseys even when the Prov. Bruins were not in town. Devils/Panthers jerseys were non-existent. So I think the Sabres Jerseys indicate strong Sabre support in Rochester rather than just because it is an affiliate.

Yes, that is what I was referring to in regards to the Sabres being the closest NHL team to the area. I haven't been in a while, but I'm sure you see a lot of Sabres jerseys at Syracuse Crunch games as well.
Buffalo has Mighty Taco, Mighty Taco, Mighty Taco...
There's 2 in Rochester. I'm surprised they're just now expanding.
