From what I know, it is about an hour or so. Just keep the border crossing in mind.

For daily commuters there is the NEXUS program for which you are screened and sign up for. It expedites crossings between Canada and the U.S., for those who do drive across the border often, similar to the way TSA pre check expedites passing through security lines at airports.

Good point and I forgot about that....It may just come down to actually wanting to do that commute on a daily basis.

Is it really that viable of an option to live and work a job in two different countries?

If they're close enough, yea. Neither Montreal nor Plattsburgh are right on the border though.

Might also want to look into getting an enhanced NY Driver's license - saves you from carrying a passport around.

I don't know what you mean by right "not right on the border", but they are close enough to commute to and from daily. I had friends that lived in Montréal and would visit them regularly. It is not a long trip at all, and the border crossing isn't a big deal either. It's basically just like going from Plattsburgh to Burlington in terms of the amount of time. Roughly one hour.

It's not impossible to do but my sense is that very, very few people actually do this.

Actually I knew of two professors that did it. They taught at SUNY Plattsburgh and drove in from Montréal at least a few times a week.
