Adirondacks
I had the opportunity to be at a camp on Lake Saranac in the Adirondacks last June....thought I died and went to heaven. Liked it better than even Hatteras Island or the Shenandoah Valley two of my favorite places. Someone had a lot of foresight to control development up there.
Anyone have a place in the Adirondacks they would like to rent for s wek or two?

It's an amazingly beautiful area. We used to rent in Schroon Lake for years in the summer. Should be lots of rentals there. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!

The Adirondacks and 1000 Islands are the most underrated gems of New York. And they are far enough away to be Boston or New York trendy...lol!

High Peaks area of the Adirondacks is the most underrated part of the country, IMO.

High Peaks area is great, but I often spend time in the Schroon/Pottersville/Minerva area and I really like it there too.

Like-minded folks
It is nice to hear of others' experiences in the Adirondacks. It is really unique in the nation the way it is protected but still permits economic development. I hear the Lake George area (as a child I was brought there) has overdeveloped though . What a shame.
The town of Saranac Lake is a real gem...has not become too crowded but is maintained really well. I wish I was spending the whole summer up there but unfortunately my wife and I were contemplating divorce when the window of opportunity to stay at a Lake Saranac camp was open. We are a unit again but will spend 3 weeks at Hatteras instead. Nevertheless I am surprising her with a 5 day trip to Quebec (hotel booked) and we will take the scenic route from Rome NY where my Mother's family live up thru the Adirondacks to Quebec. I hope she will want to rent for a couple days near Saranac.
I recall waking in the AM looking out over the Lake at the mountains and feeling awestruck. I felt like I was Natty Bumpo or something. Though I love the ocean and the mountains in Virginia, the Adirondacks are an order of magnitude better...at least in the summer. What is good about Hatteras is that Summer is from the end of April to mid-October. I have experienced a solid week of 90 plus degree days in May at Hatteras without a cloud in the sky all week. The National Park Service protection of much of hatteras and almost all of Ocracoke is also a big plus there.

Hope the weather is great for you and..............
your wife while on vacation.............congrats on trying to work things out in the marriage! When in the summer are you coming through the ADKs?????? There are always special activities on certain weekends............There is also a new museum/ecological center in Saranac/Tupper Lake called the ADK museum/Wild Center that really has awesome exhibits about the history and settlement of this area.........Learned a lot about the glaciers and how the mountains/lakes/and variety of people came to settle this area.
Lots of places to rent canoes and paddleboats in some areas if you are interested in a paddle through the lily pads, Lower, Upper, and Middle Saranac Lake locks......There are tons of bullfrogs, ADK huge homes, blue herons and osprey.......as big as eagles.....it is truly a beautiful and romantic thing to do.........Good luck.
