Thinking of moving from FL back to NY???
Hello
I am in need of some information from my fellow New Yorker's...
I am a NYC native; born and raised there. I lived in the East Village of Manhattan until I was 21 I got married and my husband and I bought our first home at that time in Orange County New York. We lived in the Town of Montgomery. This is near Walkill, Walden, Goshen, Maybrook, etc... Five years later when I was 26 my husband was offered a general contract in Florida. He is self employed in his own construction business. At the time I was a stay at home mom and still trying to finish college. We have been in Clermont, Florida for 3 years now. Most of the time I love it here, sometimes I miss home. I have been able to finish college here and have grown to except the good with the bad here. About 6 months ago my husbands contract expired and he was offered the opportunity to extend it and we decided not to; because we are thinking of going back north. I really miss all my friends and family from the north and the seasons. In addition if your a native to NY there will never be another place like it for you
Now here is my question. I loved NYC and I loved Orange County, but neither are affordable for my chosen lifestyle. What I mean is that I could afford a $400,000 home and thousands in taxes but I don't want to live that way. That is something I haved loved about being here. I bought my home at $160,000 3 years ago and my taxes are $2800 a year I want to go back north but further up. I don't know about another area though. Where can I get an affordable home $250 or so, low taxes, good schools, good culture; I am an upper class hispanic - therefore diversity is important. In addition I will be licensed as an elementary education teacher. We have searched info on other states but I don't want to put my children through a trial and error life, know what I mean...
I have read lots about Rochester & Syracuse. Any info on all areas would be great. In addition any winter weather information is helpful. Love the snow but have never lived where it can be over 5 ft. in one snowfall..
Once again thanks for all you info

Hi- I am in a slightly similar situation- got out of fl- now want to return north;
Have you considered Monroe NY or Sullivan County? Also Putnam County (very nice-and safe for kids) further up- the housing there seems pretty reasonable. Westchester would be alot higher.
Also you may like Syracuse (I went to college ther) BUT they do get a lot of snow- Rochester is only a few miles from Canada----and on the snow belt also. I would recommend checking remax.com for some upstate NY listings- there are many areas to choose from! Good luck.

You may want to look into the Albany region too. The Albany area (the Capital District as some call it) gets less snow than Syracuse or Rochester. I heard Saratoga County is real nice. Clifton Park has low taxes compared to many other towns in Upstate NY. Good luck!

Rochester area is great, or used to be--economy not so great now, I hear.
Clifton Park is ok if you like heavy traffic, poorly designed traffic patterns, chain restaurants, and snobby and very over-rated schools, plus you'll never see your neightbors, everyone disappears into their garage with an automatic door opener, but there IS a great library.
Go where you can find a decent job, of course.

Some of my fondest memories are from those days... snow days where all of the kids would build forts in the drifts. And that hollow sound; man, I miss that.
If you like snow, and have something to do when it comes, I don't think it will be an issue for you.

"upper Class- Hispanic"
For you to write, "I'm an upper class Hispanic therefore diversity is important" is so hypocritical. Who cares about your "class" or your Nationality. Are you implying that Hispanics are "Low" class. Sister, as a fellow Hispanic woman I know where you came from in NYC. That's right your from "El Barrio". Oh yeah classy area of NYC. You are probably a low class perp trying to wiggle your self in the good areas of upstate NY. Do us a favor and stay in Florida. What was your husband in for??

Well that was extremely uncalled for....anyways, 5 feet of snow at one time does NOT happen in Rochester or Syracuse....its more like 5-7 feet all winter....the most you will typically see in a MAJOR snowstorm (which only occur in Rochester once every several years is about 3 feet. You won't find low taxes anywhere in Upstate NY really, but the cost of living overall will be MUCH lower than in the NYC region and FL when all other living costs are considered.

*NYU dorms. The great NYC landmarks such as CBGB's are being pushed out making it a boring yuppie playground.
