In NC first year teachers salaries start at $31,360, and that's with a Masters. Who can live on that? It doesn't really matter that houses are cheap, everything else is expensive.
When weighing everything I just think that NC is not the utopia people are hoping it will be.
Most of my family is in NY and I would miss them terribly if I moved. You just can't put a price on that.

yeah and trust me most teachers here DON'T have their masters..we're lucky if their degree is in education
yes you are right it is not the utopia people believe it will be..we are surrounded by housing developments, chain restaurants and strip malls..that's about it..no history, little culture, 1 children's museum, no close zoo. As one poster put it B-O-R-I-N-G...we are actually moving from here very soon (to Pittsburgh..our family is in Rochester so much closer) I value education for my children..they apparently don't here.
Oh and can I tell you how tired I am of having to dial the area code+ phone number to call my friend down the street?

In 5 years NC will likely be no different than North or Central Jersey with obscene housing prices & taxes

NYC96,
Many NYers are in NC and many ways it is great having them around
I am a native southerner.New York isn't a bad place either.I would love to buy a vacation home for the summer.I like it around Glens falls,Lake Placid and North Creek I want to go there and look around.I see home prices look good there.

I must be lost. Is this a NC board? I typed in NC on the search bar and wound up here. I didn't know there was a NY board. In reference to the rest of the post, I'm moving to NC because the housing rates are better, the neighborhoods are smaller and it seems like a slower paced lifestyle. I was a military brat and VA is just not the place I want to stay. I hope "big city" people will not attempt to overcrowd NC because it would lose the "feel" that its current residence have built into it. Chances are, if you are not happy where you are and the reasons are not physically outside of you, you won't be happy where you are going. I'm moving to get "things" I want, and find the lifestyle I want for my kid, I hope to find that kind of atmosphere in NC.

This is partly why we moved from Alabama to Western NY. There is no soul to the place. I noticed that on day one. The strength of the economy is partly to blame. The place just grows and grows and grows and traffic becomes a greater part of one's life. The insatiable need for more homes and restaurants and strip malls...I picture NC the same way.

One of the very reasons I quit entertaining myself by posting in the NC forum.....the backlash is amazing and I get the distinct feeling there is some Stepford Wives mentality going on as they rally around the "camp" whenever ANYONE slings an arrow of negativity towards the area of the Triangle. Some are transplants who firmly believe they moved to utopia and no one should contradict them. The rest are natives who have become quite gallant in their chest-pounding pride of NC as the newcomers swamp/saturate their locales. The sad thing is, they don't realize that they are being taken advantage of and like locusts, the newcomers will hop the first train out of town when NC/SC/TN start resembling Florida in a few years........

You think THAT'S bad...try LIVING AMONGST THEM for 12 years. I have to say the transplants that were trying to validate their move and scoffed at my not thinking "the triangle" was utopia and wanting to move back north grinded my nerves WAY more than any "natives" complainng about the "invasion".

There is a great feeling of Utopia and for what ever reason people seem to think that the streets are paved of gold. What many don't realize is you are the same person no matter where you go. Jobs are not as abundant as everyone seems to believe. Food, gas and taxes are very high. Oh yeah and did anyone mention that you pay a property tax for owning a car? I am not sure how there became a NY/NJ connection to NC but there definitely is one.
I moved to Charlotte before the boom so I too have seen it change. To me Charlotte is equivalent to living on Long Island and upstate NY( Cheaper than LI about the same as upstate minus Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse). People are friendly for the most part but it seems that a large % of the population are from NY/NJ PA/CA/MD/DC/VA and as of late FL. It seems as if someone was offering a 50% off sale for anyone coming from the states of NY & NJ
