I'm Dreaming Of A White Xmas...
Hello!
I am a brazilian grandmother of 11, and my dream is to have a white xmas with our children and grandchildren: with a lot of snow and fun of course!
We thought about renting a bungalow or 2 that can acommodate all of us: 12 adults and 11 kids (ages going from 18 to 1);
We were thinking about New York State north area, but what we would appreciate is
SUGGESTIONS!
from Brazil with love,
Carola

Try the Chautauqua lake area - the off-season rentals will be quite reasonable and there is sledding, skiing - lots of winter fun in the area. You can fly into Jamestown, NY or Erie, PA or Buffalo, NY. This website shows some rentals but you can google to find others:

I'd think that some place in the Tug Hill Plateau, the Lake Ontario snowbelt, or the higher elevations in the Western Adirondacks would have the best chance of seeing snow cover at Christmas time. Towns like Montague, Redfield, or areas north and West of Speculator in the Adirondacks (out in the boonies, though) might be good places to find snow.
I suppose the Jay Peak area in nearby Vermont is pretty snowy, and the higher elevations in the White Mountains in NH might also be good bets. Of course, nothing in the East can beat places like Paraside or Mt. Baker out in the Pacific Northwest, and of course there must be some sure fire places for snow up in Alaska, and Northern Canada.

My vote would be for Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain. There is a lot to do around the Olympic Village, and it's very convenient to get to. Lake George and Saranac Lake are nearby, and it's just a ferry boat ride across Lake Champlain to Burlington, VT.
As for airports, it's about two hours from Albany NY or Montreal. If you're feeling adventurous and want to expand the vacation a little (maybe New Year's Eve in New York City?), it's about 5 hours drive from JFK airport.
Here's the site for Lake Placid:

Boa sorte!

To my friends CAugust, CrissCT,ss58yy and Ellie C., from a very rainy Sunday here in São Paulo (that's the end of Summer!):
MUITO OBRIGADA (THANK YOU) for all your suggestions! I am studying the US Map looking for all the places you named, visiting sites etc. It's so exciting, I feel like I've just started my trip to my WHITE XMAS...
ONE MORE (personal)QUESTION: ELLIE C. DO YOU SPEAK PORTUGUESE???
