The Great New York State Fair, as of 2018, has the third highest attendance of all state fairs after the one in Texas and the one in Minnesota. It is also the oldest state fair in the United States.
It typically starts the second Wednesday before Labor Day and ends on Labor Day for a 13 day run at the Empire Expo Center near Syracuse.
Have you ever been to the New York State Fair? If so, when was the first time and when was the last time? What's your general opinion of the state fair?
I've never been - I grew up downstate in an area where there are some very large county fairs, and the only people I knew in our area that would make the trip all the way to Syracuse for a fair were 4Hers. I'd like to check it out sometime, but wouldn't make a trip exclusively for that reason.
I’ve been 3-4 times and always enjoy it. I think this year set a record for attendance. Well over 100k if I’m not mistaken. The nice thing about the fair is that it’s fairly (see what I did there) cheap to attend if you want it to be. However, it can add up quick if you factor in food, rides, etc. We always eat before we go and just get snacks. You can get wrist bands for rides for $20 I think and you can ride as much as you want. Plus they always have a $1 admission day towards the end. Usually have some big concerts, typically at least a big country, rock, and pop event. Plus they have free concerts on the Chevy court. I believe last fair they had Counting Crows and LIVE for free, which I thought was pretty awesome. Overall I’d say it’s one of the better major events in the state. Plus being centrally locates in Syracuse is nice. Not really that far to drive from anywhere else in the state except for maybe NYC.
