Default Auburn

Any comments on Auburn? My impression without having stopped there, is that it is somewhat depressed. But it seems like an area with a lot of upside potential. Lots of nice older homes & older buildings with interesting architecture & history. The real estate prices seem very low there.

Auburn can go either way. I lived there for a few months in a rental. Nice older housing stock, many down to earth folks, and a big state prison. The prison has been there forever but it is not something anyone really wants in their backyard. Its right on a lake and downtown shows some glimmer of hope. Wallmart is close by and pulled much of the business away from downtown to a strip mall. Crime is not a big problem there and it still has a small town feel. I used to hang in the Diner downtown to get the local news and goings on. I commuted in to Cuse from there and it was a bear, especially in the winter. I went through Weedsport to the north and caught the throughway. Skinny is close by....full of yuppies, high taxes, and overpriced homes. Auburn is not a bad choice but grab a Realtor who knows the city house by house and can guide you toward the nicer 'hoods. Much cheaper than other fingerlakes towns w/ great upside potential.

Yeah.. What seems attractive about Auburn is it's location between Rochester & The Cuse. And you can hang out in Skinny without paying Skinny rent! I hear Auburn Prison has a chair which is quite a shocking experience!!
