Conklin, NY
I am accepting a position in the vestal area but we are looking at moving to the Conklin area. Can anyone tell me about schools? I have a 12 and 14 year old. Also, I need to know any information about the area. Thanks in advance for your help!!

Smallish town just outside of the Binghamton area. Was hit hard by flooding a couple of years back, so definitely check for flood damage if you're looking at properties near any bodies of water.

..Any particular reason you're looking at Conklin vs other towns in the area?

The owner had a house they currently own in Conklin and I will be staying there for my training witht he family. After that I will be looking for housing close to the Kirkwood area. It is only for 2 months but the kids will finish the school year there and I want to make sure I am not hurting them with this move.

Yeah, Conklin is not the place I would move to if I were coming to the Binghamton area. But for only two months it won't matter.

Things have changed again and I will be in the Kirkwood area. I am going to be managing Sunset Lanes on a permenant basis. So I guess I will be settling there.

Conklin and Kirkwood flooding problems...a couple of years ago, BOTH areas were severely hit by devastating floods that left thousands of homes literally destroyed. Residents were given those formaldehyde-laced campers to live in year round. Many homes have been bought back by the government with the condition that no one build there ever again. Other residents are building there homes high off the ground on massive foundations(looks kind of weird to see a ranch house soooo high off the ground). If given a choice, I'd look elsewhere to live and send your children to school. Lots of nice, safe neighborhoods with good school districts surrounding your future place of employment. And, with very little traffic, commute times from even Vestal are quite minimal. Good luck but avoid Kirkwood and Conklin.

As a Conklin resident, I can tell you that most of Conklin was NOT flooded and there were many areas that also were hit by the flood, including Kirkwood, Binghamton, VESTAL, and a host of other towns in the county.
Look at the demographics for Conklin. It has a great school system and recently added an olympic size swimming pool in the high school.
There are many parks in Conklin and they have a great youth program offering all types of activies.
Conklin's main attraction, in my opinion, is the people who live there. It is a very close-knit and safe community (more safer than one may think).
The town is kept clean and the highway department is very efficient.
Best thing for you is to check the area out yourself.
