Default Canton, Ulster (Stone Ridge) and Queens

Weird mix of places I know! My husband and I are going to be going to 1 of three colleges starting this fall, and I have some questions about the areas surrounding them. SUNY Canton, SUNY Ulster, and CUNY LaGuardia are our choices.

How much would you say average rent is in these areas (whichever ones you're familiar with) for a 1 bedroom apartment? Do you know of any specific apartment complexes/rentals in the area(s) that are good/affordable?

What are the job outlooks for a college student seeking a part time job in Canton or Stone Ridge? Is it hard to get a job there because there are too many people and not enough jobs?

Just how bad can the weather get in Canton?

That's it for now. If I can think of any more questions I'll add them later.

Thanks in advance!

I'm in Ottawa and my brother taught at SLU so I know Canton a little bit. The weather in Canton is very much like Watertown or Massena. I would think that the lowest overnight minimum in the year is about -28 or -30 celsius with most nights in January about -17 or -18 celsius. Snowcover starts in late November/early December and usually consistent from mid/late December until mid March with some thaw periods that melt a lot of it away.

In the summer, the maximum temp for the year would be about +34 celsius with most days in July the high would be about +27 celsius...daytime thunderstorms are the source of most rain in the summer.

In the winter, Canton doesn't really get hit by lake effect snow like Watertown/Syracuse. There is no urban heat island to keep temps moderate in the winter.

Most part time jobs in Canton would be on campus, I would think.

Good luck. Canton, IMHO is a nice town that still has a core area unlike some of the more craptastic NNY towns.

Stone Ridge is a bit expensive but occasionally you can find affordable housing nearby; check the classifieds on-line for the Daily Freeman Woodstock/New Paltz Times. Employment's difficult. Again, with luck you may find something, but I doubt it will pay well- waitressing still seems to be the way to make some $, unless you have a skill, or can find something through the college.

I figured that's how the Stone Ridge area might be, but I thought it might be a bit better then Canton job wise because the area seems to be more populated.
