i used to live in greenwood lake, on the ny end. we had a house on the lake with our boat....it was nice. we moved when i was pregnant, i didnt want our children going to the school there.........when i would leave for work, at the corner the kids would be hanging out waiting for the bus and they were like 10 years old drinking a big gulp of coffee and smoking.... if you know half of the lake is in nj and the other half ny end. so it depends......the nj end goes to the west milford school district, and the schools are good., as are most if not all of north jersey.....however, ny end goes to greenwood lake school, and i believe it k-8,no, i think k-5, they go to monroe (lakes road) middle school, but they get shipped to tuxedo ny for high school....which is more crazy. first its a tough high school with low standards and many troubled kids which they send to boces tech school so they can get a trade. let me back up------are you aware that greenwood lake ny is the village of warwick ny?????? which is a upscale town with top schools?????? hummmmm. so you pay their taxes but your kids dont get the benefits.....
anyho, the k-8 in gwl ny is not the best. it is not an upscale community, its has however changed MUCH in the past 5-7 years, and many improvements including the center of town with the re-dos on the buildings.....and the improvements include the school as well.......prior to the last 5-7 years there were a lot of teachers with 10yer. some are gone now, and like i said improvements are seen.
the town has the most bars per square mile i know in the county, but maybe in the state ????? so it s a big party town. many accidents each year on the lake (with drunk drivers behind the wheel of a boat) and several deaths each year.
go at night to the center of town by the light---head to cumberland farms and you will see a small piece of ghetto. depends on where you are now and what you are looking for.
we have friends that live there, and on xmas eve as we were leaving at about 1130 pm, many kids were still roaming the streets on bikes.....they looked between 10 and 14. i have a 9 year old, and she will not be on the streets at 1130 next year.
like i said, it has had many improvements in the past years, and some younger families with children have moved in making more of a family town and less partying.
at the end of the lake by the a&p in west milford there is a catholic school i think it our lady queen of peace. ive only heard good things.
good luck.
