You should be fine. Watertown's South side is the best part of the city and Sherman is close to the hospital too.

I believe it is a nicer part of the East side of the city.

Gotham St is nice once you get past E Flower Ave. The age of MOST homes in Watertown are similiar, since it is an old city. The reason Arsenal St and the Square are not desireable is becaues they are mainly run down apartments and duplexes with no yard for children. So for the most part they are cheaper to rent which has brought in a lot of drug dealers, punk kids and so on and so forth. I lived in Watertown for 23 years, and go back to visit every 3 months. State St starts to get nice after N Pleasant St....Arsenal's cross sections are ok to live on. MIll St and E Main have some not so desireable areas.

This makes me really sad lol. My husband and I are military and will be stationed at Ft.Drum in a bit over a month, while he was deployed to iraq still just last month we bought a home in watertown. Our closing date is actually this month but this post is scaring me.
Unfortunately there was only so much research I could do in a months time, the move was unexpeced because my husbands father recently passed away and he is from New York City and we got stationed as close as we could. Unfortunately again 5.5 hours away was the closest we could get lol.
Since we live in Washington State right now i could only fly over and look at the homes in the course of 2 days. We are almost closing on our house now so theres no turning back, but we seem to in the place you concider less desirible which scares me having two young children.
I have noticed that there is alot of very low priced houses but our house has been recently fully remodelled and sold for profit so have 2 others houses on the street 3 on a connecting street and it seems to be the trend for the neighborhood.
So what I was woundering if there is anyone living off of mill street south of the adams recreationns field even down through the river know if these neigborhoods are now improved. Perhaps someone that live there now or recently since i noticed most of these responses were in late '08 and were heading into '10

To be honest, you don't have anything to worry about in Watertown. I was stationed there in the early part of the decade and while some parts look "rougher" than others, it is not a bad city at all. I guess things are relative, but Watertown doesn't have any "war zone" neighborhoods or anything like that. Historically, the north of the river is more working class, but it fades the further north you go.
Actually, the area you are talking about is fine. Yes, it is north of the river, but there are nice neighborhoods there too. Here's a street view of Mill St. : mill street, watertown, ny - Google Maps
