Yeah, I never understood that kind of logic. It's probably because Westchester is bordered by the Bronx (Part of NYC) while Rockland is on the NJ side.

NOT a stretch at all. I don't know anyone here in REAL UPSTATE New York who says, "I'm going to Upstate New York=SULLIVAN County to go hunting or etc." .. We REAL UPSTATE NY people have about ZERO CONNECTION/RELATIONSHIP/INTEREST in the 7 DOWNSTATE Counties of Westchester/Rockland/Orange/Putnam/Dutchess/Ulster/Sullivan. It's ` Y-O-U ` New York City, Long Island and maybe northern New Jersey residents who have the CONNECTION/RELATIONSHIP/INTEREST with those 7 Downstate counties and who go hunting, fishing, snow skiing, go to the race track there, visit the resorts there, play golf there, vacation, buy summer homes, vacation property, get your drinking water supply from that area; it's not us REAL UPSTATE people and region. Sullivan County being rural has nothing to do with the fact that it is located in Downstate NY. DOWNSTATE is NOT JUST all heavily developed New York City & Long Island; Downstate has cities, small villages, countryside, very rural areas, farms, mountains, lakes, rivers, streams, wildlife animals, etc. just as REAL UPSTATE has the same things. What do you Downstate people say when you are going to drive to New Jersey or Pennsylvania, "Oh, I'm going out-west?" What do you say when you are going to Cape May-NJ or Atlantic City, "Oh, I'm going down-south." I don't think so. Some people like to think that New York City is the center of the Universe, but alas it isn't. So STOP THINKING in terms of EVERYTHING as being described/measured from WHERE NYCity is LOCATED. Look at a ` F-U-L-L `` M-A-P ` of New York State, NOT just your New York City area. It's as clear/plain as the nose on your face that those 7 southeastern NY Counties ARE PART of DOWNSTATE New York. Moderator cut: personal JUST LOOK AT A FULL NEW YORK STATE MAP = IT'S VERY CLEAR.

The mid-hudson valley is downstate. That means the following counties are downstate:

Ulster county
putnam county
sullivan county
dutchess county
orange county
westchester county
rockland county
nassau county
suffolk county
and the nyc five counties

the best map i could find of the regions:
Exactly Correct!! Thank you for this logical accurate concise description of >> > DOWNSTATE New York!!! I guess that you have LOOKED at a FULL New York State MAP unlike some people who evidently have not.

The MAP of DOWNSTATE New York you posted below, almost perfectly shows/depicts/delineates the correct NYS Landmass that comprises the Downstate New York Region.

www.city-data.com/forum/15846855-post130.html

The only other county that should be included is Sullivan County and it DOESN'T matter that Sullivan is very rural; makes NO difference. The 3 sections of Downstate New York are shown: #1 section) = 7 southeastern NY counties-(add Sullivan) are shown in rose & orange color, #2 section) = New York City is shown in red color, and #3 section) = Long Island is shown in blue color. Add Sullivan County and you have the PERFECT/ACCURATE map depiction of DOWNSTATE New York. GREAT JOB!!!

You take this very personal grdnrman.

I find that very strange. I've been all over our great state, and will continue to travel it like I always do: on a regular basis. I enjoy everywhere I go. I've never felt the need to call any place "REAL" to the exclusion of another location, or hold myself on a different level than people in other areas of our state.

In describing Downstate NY, I just prefer accurate/logical information. When people say when someone takes one step north of the New York City border that means a person is IN Upstate NY, that just isn't true and it's a profoundly silly statement. I prefer "REAL" "ACCURATE" information rather than "INCORRECT" "ERRONEOUS" statements which are purely/merely personal faulty notions. What I find very strange is that some (not all) people who live in the Downstate NY area can not see the obvious truth that the 7 southeastern NY counties ARE PART of Downstate NY in addition to NYC & LI; some people in Downstate NY counties actually DO KNOW that they live IN Downstate and say so. Do YOU harbor issues against those 7 southeastern NY counties/people in the Downstate NY area so don't want them included in the DOWNSTATE designation?; are they too rural, are they less sophisticated/less worldly, do they have/make less money, do they dress in non-designer clothing, are their homes too proletariat, is it because they don't drive Audi's/BMW's/Cadillac's, is it because they don't belong to an "exclusive" country club, is it because they aren't connoisseurs of the finest French wines, is it because they don't go the The Hamptons for weekends & vacations=just what IS your BEEF for wanting to keep those 7 Downstate counties/people OUT OF the Downstate designation even though they ARE obviously located IN Downstate?? There. I can "play" psychologist too! It's a very easy task; just look at a FULL New York State map, see the 3 sections of Downstate New York, and stop looking at the world as if EVERYTHING is judged/measured/described in relation to NY City.

World as well as New York State geography was ONE of my straight "A+" subjects in school. I know THAT subject bores some people but education takes concentration/attention/reality.

I have no issues with people who live in Downstate NY. Moderator cut: Please discuss the topic, not each other. What IS a shame is that some people are blind/oblivious to the obvious reality that Downstate begins up at the northern border of Sullivan/Ulster/Dutchess counties, not at the New York City border. Moderator cut: Please discuss the topic, not each other.

I too have travelled to every part of New York State including NY City and Long Island as well as many other States and countries. You said that you have travelled across NYS too. That's nice. But that has nothing to do with the correct landmass description of Downstate NY and expressing correct information versus making/telling faulty personal notions/beliefs. Everyone who lives in New York State is a New Yorker; I never said otherwise. Yes, you are a New Yorker too.

I'm from Chautauqua County but live on Long Island.

The NY-PA border runs somewhere along the 42nd parallel north and then heads south at some point around Wayne County PA. If one were to draw a line along the 42nd to about where NY-CT-(MA) all meet then, IMO, one would have drawn the line between "upstate" and "downstate", in the broadest sense, because one can only travel (further) down-state by passing the 42nd.

poughkeepsie is the start of upstate. Upstate cities of note are Syracuse and Albany. Rochester and Buffalo constitute western ny and are culturally midwestern whereas the rest of the state is northeastern.

the only real issue I have with the upstate moniker is when downstaters use it as an insult. My annoyance is when those who live "close" to NYC consider themselves more cosmopolitan than upstaters. Yet, if you have ever been to long island or westchester you will notice the lack of any buiding over two stories tall, as well as numerous suburbs. I grew up in the city of syracuse so I consider myself to be more urban than long islanders for example.

I was born and raised in Rockland, and I always say I am from Upstate if im speaking with people not familiar with the area... I think anything on the mainland except perhaps south of White Plains is considered Upstate.
