I don’t disagree necessarily, but I am a little surprised to see Saranac Lake listed instead of Lake Placid. I also don’t think of Rochester in the same terms as the rest of the communities on the list.
I agree that Rochester is not in the same class as the other places; Canandaigua (the lake, not just the city) is basically Rochester's seasonal Finger Lake campground. (Keuka Lake would get my vote for the best of the Finger Lakes; the small and charming western Finger Lakes are largely unknown other than to locals, who are not too unhappy with that state of affairs.)
Chautauqua is a surprising omission, and more in line with the tenor of the rest of the list, and Jamestown is also underappreciated, though I can't vouch for either in the winter so can't say they are 4 season towns (but some of the others aren't necessarily either.)
And the choice of Saranac Lake over Lake Placid is curious. For a long time a while ago, Saranac Lake was the heart of the ADK region, but it's become much sleepier than Lake Placid, which has overtaken its role in the ADK region.
One of my favorite subregions of the state is the western shore of Lake Champlain, an area that is not over-touristed.
Lived in Hammondsport in the 2000s and agree that Canandaigua is a good substitute for Rochester. Rochester is a medium size city, not in this class. Also liked Watkins Glen and Penn Yan (they weren't on the list). Don't know how they are faring today. Always wanted to get up to Saranac Lake in the Adirondack Park but never made it. Been to Ithaca. Corning is a nice town, as is Horseheads.
I agree with the list for the most part. Rochester seems a bit to broad compared to the other entries on this list. I would trade out Rochester for Lake Placid, even though Rochester has a ton of stuff to do year round. In fact I would place Lake Placid on my "top 3" from this list. Can't believe it wasn't included at all.
