I've been to upstate NY many times. I go there during the Winter and during the Summer. We hike and mountain bike in the Adirondacks and we rent a small house for a week near Lake Champlain. I hear a lot of shotguns when I go up there and all the hunting shops there is ridiculous.

I love upstate NY and that comment wasn't meant to be offensive. But many of them will admit that they love their guns.

Yes, I'm sure you're friend didn't exaggerate at all, heh. Even if he didn't, so what? It happens all over the country, not just New York. Speeding is still speeding.

As a former resident of New York City suburbs and now a resident of Central New York, I have no idea what you're talking about in regards to this statement. Their is an active hunting culture in and about both the Catskill and Adirondack parks, but that kind of lifestyle is found all over every wooded area where hunting is allowed. I don't hunt and the majority of the people I've gotten to know up here don't hunt. Those who do like their rifles and even then...it's not their "life."

I'm not a big Hillary supporter for President, although I think she is a good senator. Anyway, could you please post the link to the article or at least reference where she said she is going to "outlaw guns in New York State?" There would be a wave a criticism in this state if she ever said anything remotely along those lines.

I guess your friend who can't believe he/she got that ticket for only breaking the law A LITTLE must have told you Mrs. Clinton said that, heh.
I was in the car at the time of his ticket so I think I know what went on. I also know police officers and they say they'll let people go as long as they aren't going 10 over. But giving someone a ticket on an empty highway in broad-daylight going 5 over is ridiculous.

The Clinton comment is something I didn't dig deep into. It really doesn't affect me. But it did spread around upstate. I heard a guy talking about it when I went to Cooperstown.

OK the Adirondacks is like a state park, it's all wilderness. You honestly think ALL of upstate looks like that? In addition, most of Upstate's population lives along the I-90/Erie Canal corridor (i.e. Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany-Schenectady-Troy).

You mean the "North Country" when you say "Upstate." The North Country is part of Upstate, but by no means is all of upstate like that (would that it were! The Adirondack area's beauty is unmatched.)

the few people who actually live in the very very very rural and isolated Adirondacks cannot be used to generalize all of the people of Upstate NY. If you can do that, I could use a few mafia-esque families from Staten Island or lower Brooklyn to generalize about everyone in the NYC region.

"wasn't that USCIS? I know a lot of Canadians who say it's too much trouble to come over the border these days. Too much trouble at the crossings. I don't think the state or local cops are the issue."

Take a drive at 10:30 PM out the perimeter of Alex Bay on a weekend. Also take a walk down to the villiage dock. The cops have ruined Canadian tourism long before USCIS and 9-11. Victoria Day was a HUGE holiday up north...the cops killed it. Nobody tours around on boats from Canada to NY at night anymore...has nothing to do with the border guards (there are none when boating...you phone in).

As far as NY being a police state...try a ride on the Thruway between Albany and Utica....

I've been on the Thruway countless times to Albany and never had any issues unless I was going 15 over the speed limit.

Here's a thought to anyone complaining about Cops being too harsh in NY..or anywhere else for that matter...don't speed, and don't break the law! I know that may sound crazy, but hey atleast you'll save gas!

I disagree I'minformed.... Some people find 65 to be a little on the low side (myself included.) If you are passing correctly, not tailgating, and being attentive, then I think that "reasonable and prudent" should apply.

The rule is 72 on the thruway (and other 65mph zones) and you'll be fine. That doesnt discount the FACT there are swarms of cops on the Thruway. Compared to the Mass Pike, its not even close....so many more in NY.

Try Route 11 between Watertown and Champlain as well. Brings a whole new meaning to "high alert"...

I see more state police on 90 in MA than in NY, especially in the Boston metro area.
I've driven the rt 11 route from Plattsburg to Potsdam countless times and have seen very little police presence.
