Default Moving from Long Island to Dutchess . . . NEED HELP!

Ok, so my husband and I are moving up to Dutchess County from Long Island. We have a 2 year old and expecting another in Sept. We have looked at houses in Poughkeepsie and Hyde Park, but are also considering Pleasant Valley and Hopewell Junction. What can you tell me about all of these places? We aren't too concerned with the school districts because our kids are so young and we'll probably move before they get to 1st or 2nd grade. My main concern is that we move to a good neighborhood. I want my family to be safe and feel comfortable. Again, any info would be appreciated!!

There are lots of good places to live in Dutchess County. One big consideration is whether or not you need to have the easiest possible commute to the NYC area.

No, we don't need to commute to NYC. My husband is going to be working in Somers. He is ok with commuting 35-45 miles. We're really interested in either Pleasant Valley or Hyde Park.

just a thought but Carmel is a nice and safe town and close to Somers, probably about 20 minutes, lots of community feel, small town charm, lots of lakes and parks and close to malls. also near I 84 and Taconic pkwy

I would go only with Arlington Schools, Its not the boonies up here at all. Wappingers schools does also well. I think arlington and wappingers rival one another. Wappingers have some schools that will want to avoid (the closer you get to 9).

But of course its what you put into education at home as well. Both schools are predominately middle to upper class as well. But they are large districts that have alot of new subdivisions.

Would go for poughkeepsie, nor hyde park. Since you will move before the kids enter school...I would have to say if you are going to buy..at least buy in the arlington district..for what its worth..at least you will be able to sell in a couple of years and be able to "write in on the multiple listing".

Towns and hamlets overlap one another..so dont neccessarily go by town...go by school district. Hopewell junction part of it at least fall in arlington schools..so does east fishkill, beekman and lagrange. All of those towns are wonderful, family orientated and have a "desperate housewives appeal to it". These towns are also very expensive..and the taxes are very high. We are not the boonies up here in dutchess..its not cheap to live here contrary to popular belief.

I am a mom of young kids and we were spoon fed to ONLY consider arlington 10 years ago..we are happy with the choice..but like I said we pay 10k in taxes for a raised ranch.
