A big part of why we wanted a new area was so we would be with a big mix of people and would not have to confront that sort of stuff in our neighborhoods.
Out & about town is one thing but experience has taught me that your neighbors become your friends so we did not want to chance being rejected right off the bat for who we are Not.
Do we the people not have the right to move to any town or state? If a place is for sale and we can get a loan or otherwise afford the house , do we not have a right to buy the place if we wish?

Oh, sorry I forgot. This is the C.S.A. not the U.S.A.

Yes....all agencys that track such infomation such as CRIME say the South has the Highest percentage of Criminals. All the safest states are Up North. Nobody would help? Zinn has a horrible reputation with conservatives. He's down there with Chomsky so, just so you know, holding up a Zinn comment is not going to change the minds of people who don't see eye to eye with you.

As a former Long Islander now living in Tennessee, my observation here is more people are arrested for little things...and the newspapers report it all. On Long Island, if your daughter's wagon was stolen out of the front yard, do the police even bother to come out and write up a report? Here the police respond to everything. Someone steals the sunglasses out of your car at Wal-Mart, the police respond and it's reported in the newspaper. In my Tennessee town, if you're stupid enough to be driving drunk, you don't just get arrested for DUI but your name and address goes in the newspaper, as well...even if no accident was involved. Ditto if you are caught shoplifting a $25 item from a department store or a carton of beer from a supermarket. In other words, there are no little crimes here and the police and press respond. I don't live in a small town, either. The population is approximately 27,500. I lived in a town with a population of approximately 11,000 on Long Island and the police wouldn't even come and write up a report if your car was broken into.

True, the War Between the States is a topic of current conversation, and preacher religion is very high on the spectrum. I found the opportunity for relaxed conversation to hold great value there, as did manners. Both of which I prize. Btw, you left off your list the military and bass fishing as areas of interest in the South.

In a way they're being innundated with people of a different culture, who they suspect are trying to change things. I think they do some of it on purpose to close ranks. It is certainly different than some other parts of the country to be sure. Tradition is not dead there by any means. If you don't think you'll fit in there, you probably won't.
Wow ~ I think you hit the nail right on the head!

I've lived in Charlotte for a year, it's a beautiful city and everything, the Ballantye area is gorgeous and for a few months I actualy liked Charlotte. But after time went on, I missed NY more and more. The job market over here is different, the culture is very different. I miss going to Times Square, and having a fun night out. Even going to the observation deck on the empire state building. You go to downtown Charlotte, and theres uh....Discovery Place? and like 20 bars. We JUST got the train. Taxes are less, but that dosen't make for a better quality of life as everybody rants and raves about. I knew somebody that owned an auto repair shop off albermarle rd. He was murdered two months ago he had a wife and two kids. I was a sales manager at a car dealership and had to fire an employee for stealing. The next week he was in my face theatning to kill me. I also have a friend that was robbed at point blank at a Nationwide insurance sales office with an uzi, the guy made my friend get on the floor and put his hands behind his head. I've lived in NY my entire life (Queens, Manhatten and Rockland County) and NEVER had that happen to anybody i've ever known my entire life in NY, the worst thing that's ever happened to me in Queens was somebody stole my new sneakers from my car when I was in the gym
