I think it's difficult for people outside of NYC/Long Island to understand how we feel about pizza and bagels lol. It doesn't mean NYers are unhappy in a new location. I'm sure many people love where they are, but just miss those few things like pizza and bagels that you can't get anywhere else. Doesn't mean they're unhappy. |

Maybe the problem lies within the person not wanting to adapt to the new culture/venue or nuances of the new place. Maybe the person moving thinks they are personable but come off with a northeast(specifically stereotypical "new yorka attitude and whaddya gonna do bout' it). For the locals, they might find it annoying.. I dont know, I am just guessing. You cant blame it all on others...take some responsibility on your OWN as to why you couldnt adapt..thats all. There is more to life than getting the house...and I totally agree and support those that are moving so they can get a home (large or small). But you do have to do your complete homework and make sure that its the right decision for you and your family..not because you can afford a better lifestyle. JMHO. |

We all have the right to move ANYWHERE we want, complain about certain things when we get there. Some people will move back, others will stay... Yes I am a YANKEE and proud of it, but you don't have to call me it ALL the time...It is NEVER said with anything but disdain! Southerners who move north (yes I'm sure it happens) are not greeted with "Oh your a d*** southerner!!! (OK I'm ready for the replyn posts telling me to go back to NY...sorry ain't gonna happen!!) |

Nope not going to tell you to come back to NY..if you are happy where you are...and I never said you have to like EVERYTHING about everyplace...but why bother complaining about it either...to time pass? Seems ridiculous to me...if you want to complain and be negative..then its only going to breed that feeling.
Look its one thing if you give it your honest shot and effort trying to like the place you moved...but if you moved and are just like "oppps the grass isnt greener anymore"..then its totally on you for not picking the right place. Dont give up on the place...just like you said..you arent going to move back to ny right..but you are giving it your best and honest effort in adjusting to where you are at. Seems to me that you have the right attitude about it anyway. As far as northerners being so "friendly" and greeting everyone so nicely...not true..there are bitter people everywhere..east coast versus west coast..north versus south...I wonder if the midwest gets involved with anything? LOL From personal experience...the moment someone asked where I am from originally and I say So Cal...I get one of two reactions 1. WHY on earth would you move here and give up the weather... LOL 2. "ohhhhhhh" is it really like "90210, desperate housewives of orange county, or there is some sort of illusion that its the land of fake boob jobs and blonde hair (thats media hype)...Just like NY has the mafia running the whole state. And believe me...comming from the outside, there are nuances in NY that the natives dont want to face but are true as well. Its not all a bed of roses here either...there are thorns in every state. Just make sure its the right state for you. |

I agree, my point was that IMO northerners treat people coming up there, better then southerners treat people coming down here.

Okay..put the guns away for now...why do you guys think that is? Is it just a mass migration issue and the infastructure cannot handle it....kind of like everyone was moving to florida a couple of years ago..because in that case..doesnt both states lose? The state that gains people cannot keep up with the population and the old state loses the population. From a state standpoint....seems to me that its a lose-lose situation. Maybe the north is such a melting pot that people really dont care too much? Although in the bouroughs there appears to be alot of segregation with different cultures too.
I guess you cant be happy everywhere right? Each state has issues. |

We see this on a smaller scale her in Richmond Va. People are moving into the outlying rural/farming counties building their oversized homes and thats fine. The problem begins when these new residents start complaining about their neighbors habits. To paraphrase some quotes from an editorial... Don't complain about your neighbors dogs, they will always run loose and bark. Don't complain about the old cars next door in the field they have been there since the Korean War. Don't complain about the manure in your neighbors field, he does it 3 times a year. Don't complain about "how far" it is to shop or do anything. We don't mind you moving in but if you want paved roads, lights and conveniences then move to the neighborhoods in the west end. What the author was trying to say is you moved out in the country for a reason, don't try to make it what you had/want. Maybe this is part of the problem being from Ny originally I do complain about the lack of decent bread, bagels and pizza but I also have seen changes in the last 25 years and it's for the better. When people decide to move south maybe they should examine why they moved. Overall I have a better standard of living then I could in NY, for me it was a good choice. I hear about the "war" so what it's part of their culture like Columbus day or St Patricks was in NY. Heck when I was stationed in South Boston they didn't want you there unless you were white, Irish and live there for several generations. I guess what i'm trying to say is every place has it's quirks and if it's not for you then don't move. |
