Maybe it's changed but not too long ago I remember people panicking when a black family would look at a house for sale in their neighborhood. From my experience ghettos on LI were based on race, but here in central VA they're based more on economics.
.

I have seen the same thing up in Rockland. I remember when the 1st black family moved in. He was a doctor, who cares any one that can afford a 400,000 home at that time (80's) is no schlump.

Here in the Richmond area some of these neighborhoods are run by nazis with more rules & restrictions then I care to comply with. They make nice houses but not homes. I suppose if I was a Buisness Proffesional who relocated every several years I would appreciate the security of knowing everything will always look the same.

When we moved from Va beach to Richmond I was amazed how seperate the communities are but it appears to be both sides that live that way. Va Beach was much more homogenous, maybe it was the Military presence that caused that.

I guess things have changed, because in all of the neighborhoods that I've lived in here (87-present) a black family moving in was never a big deal. Now a family of renters was another story.

We live by Wyndham in a nice little neighborhood. So far no Neighborhood Nazi's but still a tight community with a lot of get togethers. Halloween is a real blast for the kids and parents.

It is weird here identifying with a development and not a larger area, and they the neighborhoods are also directly cut off from each other. Some people seem to like those lines and you can tell they are sizing you up when they ask where you live. Then there's the elementary school silliness when certain neighborhoods think that they own the school because it's in their area.

wow, this thread kind of solidifies what I thought...my brother and his wife had suggested moving to NC to be closer to them but I always had misgivings about whether I would really like that area. My father and I visited Beaufort a few years ago and we did get attitude from someone for being northerners.

In Beaufort? I'm frequently down there and have always enjoyed my stays and never got an attitude. How did they know you were from the north?

I'm just down from you off Broad near Golds Gym. You are right where we live seems to be the status quo. I have attended several rezoning hearings for Deep Run & Hungry Creek and I can say 1st hand these people are nuts.
Deep Run was very ugly and Hungry Creek not much better. The recent hearings for Twin Hickery set a new standard for riduculus. I guess having to choose between 2 new schools less than 2 miles apart is just an unresonable request.

While my family grew up in Detroit area I used to live in NC, and my niece currently lives in Beaufort. Some of the locals (who don't depend on tourist for their living) do have an attitude toward Yankees. However, not as bad as a little inland, in the old plantation areas.
The growth around there is quite stunning and reflects a lot of Yankee money.
In fact, my niece was given a three bedroom house. A guy from NJ wanted the property (on the water) but wanted to build his own McMansion. All they had to do was move it. That is the kind of cash coming in their from up north.

When my son was going to Shady Grove Elementary we attended a meeting to address the overcrowding there. We were told that since it wasn't "our" school, regardless of my taxes, that we should be forced to the brand new Twin Hickory. We put in for our kid's transfer right away and it was great, but it was only temporary until Rivers Edge was built. Turns out Rivers Edge is great and and my kids loved going there. So one son went to three elementary schools and my other son to two all without us moving once.

I've heard good thinks about Rivers Edge. Shady Grove they can keep it. Mine attended Longan and even now it's below capacity. Actually all our schools including Hungry Creek & Tucker are below. I used to wonder why they stopped building in the middle of neighborhoods but after Twin Hickery's rezoning I understand why.

Haha, same here. In school, kids used to call me a Yankee..and I said "um no, I'm from California". Pretty ridiculous mentality anyway..like, who gives a **** dude?

Yep. And I'm not one to conform or put on a front or whatever...I'm for real. So people thought I was pretty cool in school, but I never had any real friends because I couldn't relate to them and they couldn't relate to me. Oh well...I'm not bitter at all. I'll be glad when I can move for good. That's all I can say.

Wow, Raleigh must be a lot different than Charlotte. Virtually everyone I know in Charlotte is from up north with few exceptions, so I'm not so sure the OP's warnings hold as much weight here. If going into the outlying areas, they probably do, but as for the Charlotte metro area, they really don't. We even have a northern mayor, but he's still an idiot. Though he is a Rebublican, Mecklenburg county is mostly Democrat and we voted against W. in the most recent election.
