Yep. And I'm not one to conform or put on a front or whatever...I'm for real. So people thought I was pretty cool in school, but I never had any real friends because I couldn't relate to them and they couldn't relate to me. Oh well...I'm not bitter at all. I'll be glad when I can move for good. That's all I can say.
I went to college in Nashville, and was part-time pastor of a small church in a small town about an hour South of Nashville. One of our members who was from there originally, had lived in Detroit for much of his adult life. He had his own business and did very well in MI. So, when he retired back home to TN, his sons asked him to open a store in TN for them to run. He opened a store in town, and waited for the people to show up. After a year of almost no business, he asked his banker what was wrong. He was selling the same product line at a very competitive price. His banker told him that since he moved up north and made all that money, they considered him a traitor and wouldn't trade with him for a while. He had to prove that he was really one of them. Given that I was a Detroit native, this made me feel really secure.
His solution was to move the business, out on interstate 24 out of town and they did fine.

I am from tha south and i guess i should even be typing these words because i just learned about computers and i should probably feel like i can walk outside with 200 dollars on me and wave it around because people are so into hospitality here lol and there are no street smarts in tha south either...lol......well listen the guy that said we might be afraid of northerners corrupting us is kinda true.....i have been going out with this girl from ISLIP NY....for a couple months and the other day her 8 year old son was told to get his seat belt on by his mother or she would count to five....well the boy started sarcastically counting down to five and then said i still didnt put it on and then he clicked it in and she didnt do anything.....and i see child behavior like that from alot of kids that were from New York....i guess they are raised not to be afraid to talk back to people but to do that to your parent is something that would get me an old fashion southern whoopin where i was raised.....im not generalizing all people from Neew york but alot of the kids i meet from there have the same kinda discipline problems with running thier mouth...

I have to say that the whole "it's what you make of it" mentality is the biggest load of bs I've heard on this board. All that is is just a nice way of saying, "it's what you're substituting or settling for".

We moved to Concord, NC and can't wait to high tail it out of here and back up to New Jersey. I miss living so close to New York and the shore. There's nothing here that "I can make of" to substitute going to the Garden for a Rangers game, Yankee Stadium for a ballgame, a beer on the boardwalk and watching games with my Dad.

On top of that, a lot of the stereotypes down here are based in truth. However I fell victim to what I think a lot of us won't admit to doing. When I saw posts on this board I would see ten responses with stuff I didn't want to hear. Then I'd see that one post validating what I wanted to believe and ran with it. Now that I've lived here I wish I paid attention to the initial responses.

That's neither here nor there though. We're leaving for NJ in a few months. North Carolina is a great place to visit, I'd rather not live here any longer.

A lot of stereotypes about various Yankees are true also. The problem is many people refuse to go native. You have to understand and accept that an area may have different ideas of civil behavior and a it's own culture,if not you'll never fit in. I had a hard time when I first went south but I adapted and have thrived here like I never could in NY.
I loved growing up and living on LI, but I love raising my kids in VA.

So basically, what you are saying since you must so much in NY, that you probably wouldn't be happy anywhere? There is more to life than baseball and hockey.

That's really like telling a good ole boy from NC, that there is more to life than Pickup trucks, Nascar and fishing. Maybe so, but not to him.
For some people, their surrounding don't impact them very much. As long as they have a nice house and can pay their bills, they aren't effected by the location. To others, that just isn't the case.
BTW-There is more to life than lower taxes, no snow, and square footage.

I like saying that southern hospitality is actually southern hostility someone here in Tennessee spelled it wrong. Hey i'm a shock value fan, Andrew Dice Clay did'nt get where he was without his followers. That said, I've lived in all four corners of the country, Don't move to Dunlap Tennessee for its Deli's, Don't move to Maine for its nightlife, Don't move to Salem Oregon for sunny weather or you'll be miserable. If home is where the heart is learn to make a comfortable living there or compromise.

In the South, if you are not from the South, you are a Yankee. It has nothing to do with New England.

All I can say is, if you get attitude for being a Northerner (or Midwesterner, or West Coast dude), you are probably giving off a lot of attitude. Not happy? The interstate runs north as well as south, west as well as east. Cheers!

The middle one applies to me, but the other two don't. I absolutely hate snow and I have seasonal affected disorder, so my previous residences of Detroit and Buffalo were not good for me. The hating snow definitely comes from Buffalo, because I didn't hate it before I lived there. However, the main reason I came to Charlotte was because I couldn't find a decent job in Buffalo. I had been working in a pizza place and in a tuxedo store for a while making $7-8.50 an hour. I moved to Charlotte and landed a good job within 3 weeks. I know a lot of people move here for the lower taxes (they really aren't that much lower) and square footage, but not the case with me. Also, most homes where I used to live in Buffalo are way cheaper than what they go for around here.
