While that's true of the CITY of Middletown, it isn't for the whole town/area where the mall/chain restaurants are. I agree, I would never tell anyone to move to the city of Middletown. But, all the bad/negative of the city really stays in that section. For example, if someone who didn't have kids in the school system moved into the Fairways at Wallkill on Golf Links Road, they would probably love the area and have a completely different opinion than you. They would never have a need to go into the city of Middletown.
The OP is older and I assume doesn't have kids(because they are looking into a 55+ community) so schools aren't an issue for them. OP, if you are still out there, where is this community in Middletown? That would help so we could tell you to go for it or stay away.

Wildflowers is oustide town and has a country feel. Not far from Maples farm market and all services. It is a nice area. They are building a new Hospital which is to be completed in 2011, Plenty of medical providers. Let me know if you need more about the area

Well first off let me say I like, but not love middletown. I like that it is quiet where I live, and all the neighbors are friendly. But I hate that theres not much for me to do to hang out, except going to a friends house or going to the city. I am originally from Queens, NYC. I have been here for one year and my mom has been here for a few. Im a young kid who moved back in with mom so I could attend the college that is not to far from us.
What I have noticed about Middletown is the gossip passed on about it. You will get those people from Goshen, Pine Bush, or other cities and towns that are close by, who make lil judgements and remarks about a city they dont live in. When I moved up here I tried to get a feel about the people and if there was a crime level or any of that stuff. Its very very low up here.
I think in 4 years up here my mom has heard about one murder, and a handful of store robberies. The robberies mostly ended in someone being arrested due to good citizenship. Now coming from queens, nyc. These small numbers are unthinkable even in one week. I lived in a great neighborhood down there but you have to take into consideration that queens is maybe 3 to 4 times the size of middletown.
So I liked the fact that crime was not a problem here. Also there are many city transplants here, as well as some long island ones. Most have been here for a few years, or the kids my age came up during there pre teens. Their parents bring them up for a better life at half the cost.
Cost of living is great. The house my family lived in before was twice the cost in Queens, and but maybe a third as nice and comfortable. You pay an arm and a leg just to have a decent home in the city. In most cases people just get apartments if they do not have a big family.
In response to all the negatives I hear about this town, well your living conditions are a product of your lifestyle and choices. I will say that mainly the downtown neighborhood, can give you that lower quality of life feel. But then again every city has its areas, and thank god there is no persistent crime in this city despite some of the poorer areas. Most of the time lower income perpetuates crime in a city. But it seems the immigrants who occupy these areas just want a better life that they moved to this country for. Its not like the lower income areas of Newburgh, that are just rife with crime and poverty. Every crime stat I have seen for MT is well below avg, not to mention I can walk around freely is most areas without a care in the world. Try that in Newburgh or certain NYC areas.
But I have noticed most of the people who move here from the city are professionals with children and they buy houses in new private community areas and what not. Down town businesses are really nice looking and I have not witnessed any illegal activity in the area yet. Do I need glasses? =/
Yet I constantly here gossip about what goes on here. And read in some forums about where you should live and what not, as opposed to middletown, from people who do not live here. One guy went on to say " how comfortbale would you feel as a white male in a town that is maybe 40% white". Then it clicked. It seems that some people just see minorities and automatically make negative assumptions. The town is about 35%latino(mostly mexican but some PR) and they comprise most of the lower wage areas. Whites, Asians and African Americans share a split of the middle income and higher income areas. The private community I live in is fairly mixed with white, black, latino, and some asian.
Everyone gets along great, and all the kids know each other. It seems alot of these new condo or house communities are popping up alot. They all look very upscale with a fraction of city costs but that is changing as more people move to orange county. They are popping up in many other areas. Im a driver and see this alot.
Anyways my point of all this was to dispel Middletown rumors. Yes I know some people have had some weird experiences, but as far as I noticed every town has its areas of idiots. I would have to say middletowns is very small. But even so, most people who move here move to outer areas with new developments like my family did. People need to pick their homes based on the charcter of those around them. Not look around and go "oh different people live here so it must be a certain way". We all know many people have these prevailing thoughts based on stereotypes(even though everyone acts like they dont), but we should all learn to be less ignorant.
New homes for a great price is always great. Btw ours is a 3 Br, 2 and a half bath, with a great kitchen and living room, deck, and huge basement. Was about 212k 4 years ago. Easily 450K plus in the city in a good neighborhood.

The unfortunate thing about your point of view and voicing it so loudly in an arena such as this STEERS people from moving to this area which deflates the pricing and only makes the area more depressed bringing in more undesirables.
Not to mention, everyone has to start somewhere...not everyone can afford a higher priced home in one of the "nicer" areas of Orange County. Your point of view can also be viewed as very offensive to the group of people who do not have the means to live elsewhere but are looking for a better life for their families then in NYC.
Please when mentioning bad, also mention the good as all good comes with some bad.
~Joey
BTW - If I were to steer like that, I would lose my Real Estate License and get put in Jail.

Middletown, NY
I grew up in M-City as they now call it. Graduated from Middletown High and all.
I must say it has changed sooooo much. My mother moved up there from "the city" when I was 6 to give us a better quality of life. It was actually a very nice place, back then. I now live in MD but go back often to visit my family.
I must admit I do not go to many of the places I used to hang out because of the gangs and drugs. As many people have mentioned, some areas are better than others, but all are just a few miles away. Rt. 211 is not that far from North Street! The positive aspects are that it is a very diverse area, which I always loved, with many friendly people. Everyone practically knows eachother. Gossip is rampant because it is a small town.
If considering moving to that area I would stay out of Middletown or anywhere in the 10 mile radius. Good Luck to ya!

Wow you have described Middletown perfectly. I lived in Middletown for about 6 years. I moved to Bloomingburg 15 minutes away, what a difference. There is nothing but drugs, gangs and violence. Everyone I know who still lives there can't wait to get out but their trapped because their home prices have dropped due to the crummy neighborhoods. 4 murders already in 2008. Only good thing is the shopping.

more questions about Goshen and Middletown
[quoteDesnik;3933497]Oh you are very welcome! I'm glad to help! Let's see if I can answer some questions for you.
My husband works in Manhattan and drives in everyday so a trip to the city for a show is easy to do!
It would take about an hour 15 mins. to get into the city. My husband and I go often to see shows and for dinner. That's just another bonus of living in the area. Far enough from the city but close enough to enjoy what it has to offer. We always drive in
There are a couple of Golf Courses in the area too. Oh, also many orchards around the area. Fall is our favorite time here. You can go apple picking, pumpkin picking and all of the orchards offer fresh pies, jams, and other goodies.
Oh, there is the airport in Newburgh which isn't far. They were just bought by the Port Authority so now they are making big changes. It is an International Airport and there should be more flights going to different places soon. It's a great airport and Jet Blue flies out of there.
If there is anything else I can think of I'll let you know.[/quote]

Hi!
I get my nails done right in the village of Goshen. It's called Blooming Nails and it is in the CVS strip mall. They do a great job, very clean and really nice ladies. I have been going there for about 2 years now. For my hair, I still go to my hairdresser in Rockland County(where we lived 7-8 years ago) Once you find a good one it's hard to go somewhere else!LOL
Sorry I can't help more with that. Let me know if you have any other questions!
