It's a very nice suburb of Utica and has turned into the economic engine of that area due to all the retail growth. The schools are very good, which means the housing costs and taxes are higher than Utica and other surrounding suburbs. If I had to live in the Utica area, New Hartford would be very high on my list.

I currently live in New Hartford. If your main concern is schools, New Hartford is a great school. Rated one of the top 100 schools in US News magazine. We've been very happy with it. Cost of living in New Hartford is higher than the surrounding areas. Higher housing and taxes. I've lived here just about 5 years and since I've moved here, there has been a tremedous growth in retail. Lots of plaza's, a mall, Barnes n Noble and new movie theatre. It is a nice family oriented town. People are quite friendly. There are things to do, you just have to do some footwork to find it, especially in the winter months.

Moving to New Hartford.
I am a young physician considering New Hartford. I have a family of elementary and high school age children. What is the general environment in New Hartford? Does this part of town embrace diversity? what is the relationship to Utica? are there good real estate and schools? Please help me make this difficult decision. Thanks.

What has been posted previously about New Hartford still holds true. I'd consider it the best suburb of Utica. The schools are very good. Real estate is cheap, but higer compared to the other suburbs of Utica. You won't find a huge selection of new housing because of the lack of growth in the area, but there should be some decent re-sales. The taxes are high for that area, but depending on where you're coming from it may be a bargain. New Hartford is not diverse, but that's not to say it does not embrace diversity - Central NY just doesn't have a lot of non-whites overall. Utica has had a large influx of refugees over the past 20 years or so and now has a 10% Bosnian population, and others from a wide range of countries, but they haven't spread much to the suburbs.
My guess is that most doctors in the Utica area live in NH or Clinton.

New Hartford is a pretty middle class suburb of Utica. The demographics break down like this: predominantly Italian Catholic, however, there is a small white protestant presence that makes things feel a little bit like Vermont or Texas with a few Asians and Middle Easterners thrown into the mix. There is strong familial connectedness in New Hartford. Entire generations of a single family will often live within five blocks of each other and people who grow up here seldom move away. There are a lot of retail chains which add a bit of suburban feel to the town, however, most of these places are in jeopardy (or soon will be) because the majority of people shop at one of the several recently opened Wal-Marts.
When I first moved to New Hartford it looked like a wannabe club med community full of convertible-driving baby boomers. Now, it feels like an armpit. I hate it and I want to leave. The town is soon going to be bisected by a giant string of powerlines. New Hartford's only claim to coolness is that it's not Utica. Good riddance!
