Well, I'm open to pretty much anything. I like the general area, with the mountains and the lakes - so beautiful.

I've pretty much been scared away from Elmira, even though when I was there it didn't seem so bad. I liked Watkins Glen too. I've been warned that the taxes in Ithaca are very high. I saw a listing in Richford - a little farm - and I thought I would come up and check it out because I really hadn't travelled that area much. I'm just worried if I buy this old farmhouse, someone will put a 400ft high you-know-what up and kill it for me.

It's a shame really, because Kansas is as windy as hell. I can't even ride a bike here without getting dirt blown in my face. But Kansas is far far away from the main power grids, so you know...

Anyway, with Elmira, Binghamton, Syracuse, Rochester, etc, I think the airport situation is good.

Glass art is a hobby of mine, so being so close to Corning would be a treat!

I just want peace and quiet. The school system is not an issue because all of my "kids" are the little furry kind. My fiance loves the outdoors and is big into kayaking, hiking , and camping. He hasn't been up there yet, so he'll be like a kid in a candy store. He works in healthcare and there seems to be quite a few hospitals around with openings that would interest him.

Thanks for responding. I've read a few of your posts and it's nice that you're generous with info about the area. ;-)

Thanks for the compliement. See..I grew up outside of a local town on a farm(so I have an appreciation for the "rural"); one sibling is a Landscape Architect; another a County planner up in the Adirondacks...I dunno' just around others who deal w/land issues. Realtors are okay, but sometimes they show you what they need to "move". My wife is also a rural person. In act she's at a 4H event w/one of our kids this afternoon. I have to go outside and do some snow clearing, feed her horse, walk the dogs, etc.. I'll sign on back about 9pm est to help you and your spouse with info(if you're on the forum). I'm a realist...which unfortunately would make me a not-to-successful realtor..LOL!

The only wind turbine proposal in that area that I can think of is in Enfield, in neighbouring Tompkins County. I think most of the power proposals are further to the north and east (Richland is south).

Thanks for the help. I know there's a big fight going on in Cochocton, northwest of Corning. I think I'll be flying into Rochester, so I'll drive straight through there.

Tioga, you're still shovelling snow?! Yikes! The summers on the lakes should make it all worth it, right?

Ellie C....well..it is melting..sort of. This is not really on this specific topic, but: look around at the hot topics for many states forums. Many are trying to find the place that probably doesn't exist. All they're looking for is/are: nice housing, open spaces, low taxes, low utilities, low-low crime rate, great schools, open /progressive/friendly locals, nearby medical and stores and whatever, beautiful scenery, great weather, and on and on. I don't think that perfect spot exists..if it ever did.

very private citizen is on a distinguished road
If you can handle the commute from Onodaga County (Syracuse) you can consider Camillus, West Hills, Manlius-Fayetteville and Jamesville-Dewitt.

You might also consider Skaneateles and Homer.

Syracuse is a small city, Ithaca a medium sized town and Binghamton a large town. Flooding can be a big issue in the hilly areas of Central New York as can snowfall so make sure and ask.

Very Private Citizen..you need to get out and around a little more. Syracuse has over twice the population of Binghamton. In turn, Ithaca has about 2/3 the population of Binghamton.....source..latest US census

Actually, Syracuse has over three times the population of Binghamton.

Syracuse City = 145,000
Binghamton = 45,000....... times 3 = 135,000

Tioga, I think what Very Private Citizen was trying to say was that Syracuse is a real city but on the small size compared to Boston, Atlanta etc, and Binghamton/Ithaca are more like large over-sized towns.

I guess it makes sense since my suburban town of Clay has a larger population than Binghamton.
