Any one from Saranac Lake NY
Hey I am doing some research on Saranac Lake NY and have some questions. I lived there for a little bit with my father when I was a kid. Does anyone remember the date the Burger King had its grand opening? I thought it was so cool then. I have a few other questions too. Can't think of them this second though. Thanks so much Researchgirl

Saranac Lake is the most unique village (municipal corporation) in New York State:
Some 75 or so villages are located in two or more towns. There are 7 villages which are in two counties. Only one village, the Village of Saranac Lake (incorporated in 1892), is in 3 towns and 2 counties:
Parts of the Village of Saranac Lake are in the Town of North Elba and the Town of St. Armand in Essex County and parts of the Village of Saranac Lake are in the Town of Harrietstown in Franklin County.
The village is named after the Upper, Middle and Lower Saranac Lakes, which are nearby, but not in the village (Lower Saranac Lake is a half mile west of the village). The northern reaches of Lake Flower, which is part of the Saranac River, lie within the village.
The Town of Saranac is an entirely separate entity, 33 miles to the northeast.

Thanks for the info
Hey thanks for replying to my thread. That's some cool info. Most of it I didn't know. So what county is Saranac Lake in? Are their any cool ghost stories surrounding the town? Hey also when I was a kid my dad used to bring me to a pond to go camping and swimming. I don't know the name of it officailly, but I think the locals called it Little Green Pond. I think it was somewhere on the way to Lake Clear NY. Anyone know what it's called? Thanks.

Saranac Lake!
Just last year we went fishing in a place called Little Green Pond..........I think it was near Rainbow Lake and possibly Lake Kushqua (spelling I don't know, but it is a Mohawk name)........There are some just awesome, awesome campsites around there; some that you can only get to by canoe and you have the entire island to yourself......that is a blast! You feel like you own the place and the loons call as it gets dark and then call during the night and in the morning.......OMG, it makes me want to go back there! The other place that tons of people go because it is a larger campground is Fish Creek. There is also a Floodwood Pond that I have fished in.........near Little Green Pond.
As for the online house hunting for the ADKs and area, never forget about wood heat. I just read when sales of wood splitters right now are just phenomenal with people getting ready for winter and also, pellet stoves are becoming more and more popular because there is no mess and it is environmentally more friendly. You buy bags of pellets like dog food and feed your stove with no ashes, chips, starting fire issues or mess..................You can always do oil as a backup.........not the main event, but you do have to make the initial pellet stove investment or I believe there is a way to convert a wood stove into a pellet stove.........not sure, but someone out there might know how much trouble that is or if possible???????????????

little green pond
Yea Rainbow lake does sound familiar. When I went camping at Little Green Pond with my dad we did have the whole place to ourselves. The funny thing is, we wouldn't even put our food up at night and a bear would come in and have a snack and we wouldn't even wake up! It was a great! Good times. I guess it must have been a black bear. They are less aggressive than grizzly. I swear my dad told me a ghost story about that place with a lady in a car in the water. I can't remember it. Since my dad has passed on, I can't ask him. Maybe he made it up or maybe it was a known ghost story? Anyone hear one like that? He laughed at me that next day because he said I had nightmares about this lady in the water. Thanks all.

Be careful here...SOME wood stoves can burn pellets and vice versa...but not all. Definitely check if your particular stove can handle both. They are referred to as "multi-fuel" stoves. Pellet stoves are great from what I hear. I just bought one for $2200...paid $1000 for 3 tons of pellets (its more expensive here on LI then it is upstate). I figure I would have spent $4800 or more on stinkin' oil.
If anyone is looking for a stove I know a guy near Albany who gets them factory direct. PM me for info.

Saranac Lake is actually located on the border of two counties ... Franklin and Essex counties.
There was a female dorm called the Prescott House for North Country Community College that is full of spirit life. Lived there for one year and have plenty of stories of hauntings. It's located on top of the hill on Franklin Ave near Moody Pond and Mount Baker. It has since then been changed to a bed and breakfast after NCCC built campus dorms for their students. It was originally built as a TB hospital and the kitchen area in the basement was actually the morgue. Lots of history in that building ... and the area.
A great campground in Lake Placid is Whispering Pines Campground. Many, if not all, sites are very secluded with each site being surround by shrubs, trees, and ... pines. Not one of your questions but thought I'd throw that in just in case you (or others reading) visit the great north country and wish to camp out.
BK ... it was there before I was living there so can't help you there, but if you have any other questions about the region, I'm sure somebody here will be able to help you out. Hope you hear more from others.
