Realistic or not, rail passenger service to NYC or Scranton would be great to have here. Of course, I've always had a weak spot for trains(The train museum in the Scranton area is great!) On a family trip to California about 5 years ago, I'd thought we'd try to mix rental car use w/public transportation. Other than the magnificent trains running north/south along the coast, California' public transportation is minimal, to say the least.
Jstrazik, couldn't agree nore w/your positive views for the Binghamton area. |

Incidentally, Tioga, we have been speaking of guiding and partially financing the construction one or more trolleys in Binghamton. In the future, if necessary, a monorail. In which case Scranton may trace our footsteps.
Absolutely, Gold Dust. We'll be creating a surreal twist of reality, a place where our employees will look forward to going to work. A fun environment—I don't mean with lousy attempts at morale, like a raffle for a twenty year old boombox. No. God, no. Through and through. Higher wage, benefits, bonus' and company paid outings help, too. We would wholeheartedly like to see social transformation along with economic. Why not? The simple expression is: Fervid staff = Fervid customers. I cannot say what our business will be simply because I don't want the competition to panic prematurely. They will. But we want to raise the bar, not to put anyone out of business. You'll recognize us when you see us. Kind regards, JStrazik |

Often, "newbies" to the area over the last 5 years have mentioned the low opinion of the southern tier many locals(almost embarrassment at being positive) have. These people need to get out around the U.S. a bit...they might appreciate this area more.

It is sad when newbies sense the locals "disdain" for the area. But to be fair, those locals probably haven't lived anywhere else but the Southern Tier, (as you indicated as well), and they have been there so long that they recall the brighter, more "glory days" of the past. IBM, EJ, Lockheed Martin, independent banks, etc. I personally love the area. It had everything I wanted. I lived there for 9 years and I truly appreciated it. I appreciate it even more now that I have left the area. |

You've got it, Tioga.
Binghamton isn't an anomaly in the nation. The entire nation is rapidly approaching an economic crisis. At the moment, we're only experiencing the tip of the iceberg. In terms of interesting places, I think every place is interesting—but somehow more interesting than Binghamton? Not so much. O', monorail? Yes. Or a skytrain. But not a space train. Maybe a soul train. Your train is my train is our train. It's a focused and assertive blueprint. Don't expect a monorail or skytrain anytime soon. It's an anticipated necessity projected for the future. Some people purchase farm land which is already yielding and requires the least amount of work. I prefer the lost cause with the greatest yield potential. |

Well, as someone who is just moving to Binghamton (coming from Vermont, with a newlywed wife from Pennsylvania who's worked in Binghamton for 1.5 years now), I have been pretty happy with what I've seen so far. I'm with jstrazik - I see the "down" side of Binghamton as something that can be built UP from. And there is already plenty of "up" that I am seeing, as well.
I've read a lot of pros and cons. Thanks for more "pros" - I'm looking forward to calling Binghamton "home" - and being able to MEAN in, in the near future. |

I'm glad there are many of you who share in my enthusiasm. And I'm excited to see this new downtown venture as it develops -- my husband and I will definitely be here.
