bath
My husband knows the area a little bit, he says it's a cute little area. There is a walmart, mc d's, b-king etc and the mall is in Horseheads about 25 minutes away. He says there really isn't much there but like I said he doesn't know it all that well. I think it's a pretty area since it is hilly. Rochester would be the nearest larger city which is about 75 miles away.

Bath - pretty strange ...
The FingerLakes region overall is pretty nice - but Bath to be frank is the pits . The city is a stop over from drug dealers from NYC . Crime , poverty is everywhere. There is a bus that stops in town that brings these crack dealers in and they stay . There are no good restaraunts for a nice meal , bad shopping - there store fronts are a mess (literally one collapsed last summer and the only cool store we had flooded and was filled with toxic mold so the people left). Many of the Police have ins with the drug dealers so they dont enforce anything . Do gooders have halfway houses all over so if your young , broke and pregnant its a destination . Dont get me wrong there are some good eggs there - nice people but the neighborhoods are overrun with crime and neglect. It is 10 miles from Hammondsport which is a resort town and 20 miles from Corning which is beautiful . My advice - tell them to move elsewhere . Bath caters to slumlords - a very corrupt , dying town .

Fingerlakesdiva has it right, Bath is in very big trouble and the worst part is most of the locales do not see it. Bath has the highest crime rate in the area, highest unemployment rate, the school system is in trouble with its state ratings, in the 4 & 5th grades, just as an example the subsidized lunch programs participation is 46% the surrounding schools are 16%. And by the way there is no Walmart in Bath. The mall what is left of it is 40 miles away

Fingerlakesdiva is probably a daughter of a doctor or lawyer that lives in Hammondsport and wouldn't know a days work if it bit her. And Coachdad I'm not sure where he got his information from, but he should dig deeper. If you want to see bad school systems try Corning or Addison and lets not forget Campbell - Savona where if you want to drive bus you just need to get a DWI. Bath has a K-Mart and a Walmart is on the way. As for the building that collapsed it was the old opera house and it did not fully collapse the roof caved and the village had the rest tore down. Or you could go to Hammondsport where the biggest store is a big m grocery store. You can see this town in the movie Dadetown. If you're a dr. or lawyer or even a whino then Hammondsports for you. Bath isn't as bad as they say.

I grew up in Bath and the bad rap it is getting from a few people here is sad. It is a nice little town that has a few problems. They are makin it sound like a nightmare.
I have lived in Florida for 3 years now and I would do anything to get the hell out of here and back To Bath NY.
I loved growing up in Bath and wouldn't trade it for anything. In my opinion, the whole state is in trouble. This is what happens when the economy is so poor. Steuben county need more jobs!
By the way, yes there is a Walmart on the way. Yay, more jobs!!

If you are a hard working decent citizen trying to raise a famile Bath is not the place to be ! A large majority of the police force is corrupt (Sincerbox). Do a search and see all the sex offenders that live there. When they leave jail there are all types of subsidized housing right there waiting with open arms for them! Crack dealers openly deal on the main streets. Many of the city officials live in different towns on the Lake so they don't even care. What a mess ! The good news is the local topless bar did re-open under new ownership ! Lets hear it for progress !

Wow. I was in Bath yesterday and you wouldn't know all this from just driving through. It seemed like it could be a typical charming NY town.
I guess that explains why those big beautiful Victorians are so cheap.
When will the people realize that you need to bring jobs to these towns or else they'll become ghost towns? And not Wal-Mart jobs either. I mean jobs that pay a decent wage that one might actually be able to raise a family on.
How can this be allowed to happen? It doesn't seem fair that big business should receive tax breaks, but that is the ONLY way you will ever attract the kind of industry that will support a community. New York needs to wake up to that fact. Imagine if a couple of thousand jobs that paid even $20/hour opened up? You would see a difference overnight. People would stay, and then other businesses would spring up as a result of need: stores, gas stations, hospitals, municipal services - which would in turn create more jobs.
This is exactly what is happening in and around Detroit - the auto industry left, and everything else is crumbling as a result. The government should have done everything in their power to make sure that industry stayed in place.
How does the government expect people to survive if they're going to allow all of the manufacturing jobs to go overseas?
