State Highway 30A runs through Johnstown and Gloversville, containing the usual mix of shops, grocery stores, banks, restaurants, and of course Wal-Mart. The downtown areas are almost identical--like twin cities without being like the ones in Minnesota--but Johnstown is the government center of Fulton County. They aren't too exciting, but they have bars and things like that.
I'm not sure what sort of job you'd get in that area, but there is plenty to do. My girlfriend and I go there when we don't want to trek out to Albany.
