New Paltz to NYC Commute
Anyone commute via public transportation from New Paltz to Manhattan? What would be the best way? How long would it take? Do you think it would be feasible to do this several times a month?

Metro North Railroad
I think the best way would be to take a metro north train from Poughkeepsie. It's about a 20 minute drive from New Paltz. They may even have a shuttle bus. The train ride would be anywhere from 90-110 minutes. If you plan on going a few times a month, buy 10 trip tickets to save on the fare. I think buying them on the web saves money also.

The Trailways bus is best. Lots of people do this daily. A consistent trip of 1.5 hours, direct, letting you off at Port Authority.

If you were doing it more than just a few times a month I'd say don't bother, that's a LOOOONNNNGGG commute.

Depends on what the nature of your work is. I just started this commute a few times a week, and my work is very reading and email heavy. So with my laptop, it's like an extension of my work day and I get a lot done on the ride.

There are three ways. Trailways goes direct to New Paltz, and the campus at SUNY New Paltz. Its more convenient on the ride up than the ride down for me since the bus schedule is a bit erratic in town and on campus than it is in the Penn Station hub where you'd catch the bus back up which leaves almost on clockwork.
The remaining two involve catching a train in Poughkeepsie. To do that you take the UCAT bus to Poughkeepsie and the last stop on that line will drop you in front of the train station. Now from there you can take either Metro North or Amtrak into the city. Metro North is of course cheaper than Amtrak, however it has to make all stops between Poughkieepsie and its last stop in Manhattan, Grand Central Station, so is a bit longer than Amtrak.
Finally Amtrak is the most expensive option of the three and the don't run as often as Metro North. One may not be able to just jump on a train at will, and frankly I wouldn't use it as a daily commute. However, The key difference between Amtrak and Metro North is that Amtrak goes direct into the city with no stops, and that the final stop on Amtrak is Penn Station, not Grand Central Station like Metro North.
All forms of transportation have an official clock in time of an hour and a half. However, Trailways uses the holland tunnel to get into the city so the actual time of the commute is more around 2 hours. As for the trains, I'm not sure, I haven't rode those to the city or up to Poughkeepsie. Plus you have to add the commute to the station, which by bus is about 15 minutes.

Empire, is it really true that people do this daily? I'd love to live up there but didn't think the commute was doable.

Yes, I definitely see people doing this daily. Right now I'm doing it about 3 - 4 days a week. Give it a shot!
The bus is best. I don't understand why someone would drive all the way from New Paltz to Poughkeepsie for the train, which takes about the same amount of time. But perhaps others who've been doing this longer can enlighten me on what's the best route into NYC?

Quick update for anyone considering this commute - I'm starting to see trailways buses with wifi, which makes this commute much easier for those of us working on laptops during the ride.
