Default Teaching in NY/CT

Hi. I'm a NYC public school teacher (3 yrs) and I'm looking to move out of the city. My partner has family in Brewster, NY and Redding, CT and so we were thinking about the Putnam area.

My partner works freelance but he needs to commute into the city a few times a week, so we thought Putnam would be good. But I've read some posts saying that it is difficult to find teaching jobs. I also read some posts that mentioned Dutchess county and Orange county. To be honest, I grew up in the city but I spent my summers upstate. So I'm somewhat familiar with the area, but I don't really know it well.

I just want to live someplace where I can afford a house, have room to breathe, and the people are friendly. I was wondering if anyone had any info/suggestions. I'm certified in NY to teach HS in Special Ed and English. I would also be willing to teach in CT (if that's any easier to get into - though I doubt it).

Hey, I'm in a similar situation. NYC teacher moving to Dutchess. I've been searching jobs and applied online to the Dutchess BOCES program. I saw a few postings for teachers on their site. Hope that's helpful.

Karen-

Have you looked at the Danbury area in CT? Housing there is more affordable than most of western CT as home prices are more similar to Duchess and Putnam County than Westchester. To commute to Grand Central, you can take Metro North out of Southeast, NY - 10 to 15 minutes from Danbury.

The Danbury area includes Danbury, New Milford, New Fairfield, Bethel, Brookfield, Redding, Newtown, Southbury and Ridgefield.

Good luck!
