Default Nordic Skiing where?

Hey could someone please tell me about crosscountry skiing around the following towns: albany, syracuse, rochester, buffalo? i lived in vermont and as far as i understand, i-87 from the start of adirondacks and untill montreal has about the same climate. i.e. the snow falls in december and stays into late march. and places like Lake Placid are awesome for skiers because they have hills. Montreal has a hill in a park in the center of the city... So i understand Albany is too warm for skiing, but how far of a drive is the nearest good nordic ski center? Is something around Mt Wittenberg good?
Also i am certain everything south of albany sucks, i.e. even if they have "crosscountry ski trails" in the catskills or whatever, you cant really ski there because it's too warm.

But ive never been to western ny, so how does it work there? I understand those 3 towns get a similar amount of snow. I hope it doesnt melt in january like in toronto. but also do any of those towns have hills with groomed trains right inside the city? or whats the shortest drive to get quality trails? thanks!

No real mountains over here, but lots of hills and snow for sure, though it's been a little warm the past few years. I think the best cross country ski area in the western NY (Rochester/Buffalo) area is in Allegany State Park south of Buffalo. The trails can be very challenging and snow is pretty reliable there. If you go a little further south into northern PA, there are a lot of ungroomed places to ski on public lands.

I'm not a skiier so have limited information.

There is downhill skiing just south of the city of Syracuse along Rt 81. For cross country they have trails on the Tug Hill Plateau, lots of snow, just to the east of Lake Ontario near Adams, NY.
