I'm considering a job offer in Carlstadt, NJ moving from Southern California (Orange County) and wanting to get some advise on locations other than NJ that might be in nearby NY area within commute distance to Carlstadt NJ for a young family. Budget would be $1M-1.25M but could certainly go lower if we could find something comparible - larger lot sizes (10k+ sqft), home size 4+ bed, 3+ ba, at least 3200 sq ft. I have posted on the NJ boards but seems like NJ areas are really $$$ re: property taxes so looking in surrounding areas to see if any better.

Thanks!

Property taxes in the surrounding areas in NY are just as high as NJ.

Aside from the property taxes, are there cities in the southern areas of NY that would be worth looking at, again with a reasonable driving distance to Carlstadt, NJ, and with the characteristics I noted in my original post?

Try Rockland County in the Clarkstown, South Orangetown, Nanuet, Ramapo and Pearl River school districts. Rockland County, NY touches Bergen County, NJ to the north.
