Default Townhouse VS Rent (Dutchess County)

Hi All,

I am planning on moving to Dutchess County (Wapperger Falls, Fishkill, Poughkeepsie area, Beekman). The main reason for packing and moving is because quality of life and school system. I have to boys 7 and 2 and my wife and I will continue to work of NYC for the meantime.

My questions are:
What is best Renting a 3BR family home or Buying a 3BR Townhouse? I know this is a general question but I would love to get the feedback of someone that live in the area or parhaps own a townhome.

Also, I know of the Community of Chelsea Cove and TollBrohers, What other communities offering Townhomes are near the Wapppinger School District. I understand that part of Poughkeepsie is service by the Wappinger School District but I am not sure of the exact area.

Default Buy a House

I personally would buy a house rather than rent one. The prices right now in Dutchess are such that it makes buying easy. As for a house vs. a townhouse... I am particular to houses, but with that comes extra work like mowing the lawn every week. Also, there are limited numbers of townhomes in Wappingers, some being quite old. My experience is that you have the really cheap townhouses and the really expensive one. But when it comes to houses, you can get all shapes, sizes and prices.

The Wappingers District extends all the way up into the Town of Poughkeepsie/Red Oaks Mill area. This includes most, if not all of Vassar Road. I am not sure if the malls are in the Wappingers Schools but the line is close to that area. Slightly north of that is Spackenkill... which is a fantastic district. But that brings you farther away from a metro north station.

Good luck with your search.
