Is there going to be a seperation between Upstate NY and Downstate NY (New York: house, income)

But anyway, Upstate representation in Albany sucks!! We need to collectively figure out a way to do something about it. We are smart and in actuallity, NYC needs us for alot from Upstate. We should use that for our advantage

as you can see here... this is not a new idea... and still discussed by NYS government... although the main fight is for NYC to become it's own little state, leaving the rest of NY to unify.... I do not think that would work...I really believe Albany feels it is too much of a connection or brotherhood with NYC...a biased relationship that sends money downward... a NYC force of gravity which leaves Western and Central NY's weak government officials confused and unmotivates... We are left with promises that never come, cuts which further hurt our economy, and never a second thought... It would be better for W and Central NY to unify... we know what our part of NY needs, the rest of the state doesn't think we are even a civilized educated force and only view us as worthless hicks... Wouldn't it be better to have one unified force? One cohesive group of people working for the same goal? And I honestly feel the rest of NY would see it as no skin off their back... they really don't care for us anyway.

If we ever separate and it won't be just Buffalo and Rochester, the best situation would be give Albany to to NYC. (Hate Albany with a passion.) The rest of the state over and up would be Upstate or just Western NY.

Our big tourist attraction would the Adirondacks and Niagara Falls with a lot Casinos.

For the msot part, NYC, Downstate, and Albany are more adaptable to the way things are set up in Albany, but for the rest of us, it just doesn't work. I think everything from Syracuse west should be it's own state, with the Adirondacks/St. Lawrence valley thrown in. And everything from Albany/Saratoga Springs east/south should stay NY state. Give Upstate NY some nice Native American name like Seneca or Niagara.

Two things to consider: Patterson made mention that Albany relies on 30% of its tax revenues coming from Wall Street ALONE.

Secondly..in the modern world, I'm not sure severing ties with upstate NY is going to help much. Yes, Watertown and Ithaca are doing very well...but most of the other big cities are part of the rust belt and are searching for something to revitialize them. Lets face it..even if NYC and their mandates are lifted off upstates tax rolls, do you REALLY think your tax rates are going to drop? Much of the industry is gone...and I know the local politicos are just as fiscally irresponsible and corrupt as anywhere. Eroding business bases and municipal drunken sailor spending (yes...pensions too) are what really need to be addressed up there if they secede. Upstate has a much bigger problem than what NYC "imposes" upon them....

To attact business, jobs and make up for lost revenue in severing ties they could make corporate taxes the lowest in the nation.

Good points, but with the recent events on Wall Street, secession looks even more appealing. If Upstate NY wasn't benefiting much from NYC's ties in Wall Street's good times, what will happen now that NYC's economy is mirroring what happened to Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse 30 years ago. Maybe now downstaters will get a gilmple of how bad it's been in Upstate NY for decades.

So here we go again. The focus of New York State politicians shifts back to Downstate now that Wall Street is faltering. Upstate NY can never catch a break. If NYC is booming, the State spends the money on more programs pushed by Downstate politicians. Now with NYC's economy weakening, the State spends time and money trying to prop up it's money making machine...Wall Street.

So no matter what happens, revitalizing the metropolitan areas in Upstate NY are never the main focus or attention in New York State. If NY State continues to only make laws and programs to benefit Downstate... Upstate NY will continue it's steady decline.
