What is Fulton like? (New York, Syracuse: real estate, homes, safe area)

Are there jobs there? Real estate prices? Is it a nice smallish town? Are any of you from Fulton?

I haven't explored Fulton much, but based upon what I've seen and heard...let's just say it's not someplace I'd recommend to my friends. A little on the dumpy looking side.

It's a blue collar city of about 11,000 about 10 miles south of Oswego. It's has fell on some rough times due to losing a lot of it's manufacturing base. I believe the housing prices are affordable and again there are some areas that are nicer than others. Route 481 goes by the city. So, they use that to get to Syracuse and the Northern suburbs for more extensive shopping. Here's some information on the area:The Valley News Online

Fulton is a bit depressing.

Housing is inexpensive with some sections being nice, some big old homes, and some areas not so nice. Basically it's a poor city based on manufacturing. There are still some plants left located right along Rt 481 the main drag to Syracuse right in the middle of the city. The other large employer besides the school district and hospital is a social service agency.

In the 60's they did an urban renewal and the downtown shopping district is akwardly cut off as it is small. The little amount of shopping available locally is in the strip mall on the southern perimeter based by a Kmart. Oswego, nearby and approx the same size is by far the nicer city.

Oswego is a nice city of about 19,000 right on Lake Ontario. It has a 4 year State college in SUNY-Oswego. Beautiful sunsets, a great Harborfest festival, good schools, safe environment and plenty of bars. When I went to college there, the people were very friendly and down to earth. Liverpool is actually a village of about 2500, but the Liverpool area has about 55,000, including parts of the towns of Clay(13090) and Salina(13088). Another nice, safe area that is pretty diverse economically and ethnically/racially somewhat too. Close to Syracuse and has a good school district. Oswego is a small city unto itself within commuting distance of Syracuse as opposed to Liverpool which is a suburb of Syracuse and quite a bit larger. It's reminiscent of a New England port city, long on quality of life, short on jobs. It's a great place to raise a family or even to retire to as long as you can get away in winter or if you are fond of the outdoors and want a place with lots of community support. Not so good if you're single.

I've gone into much more specific detail in other posts so Mainer61 may want to do a search of this forum about Oswego to get a fuller picture.
