Having a state capitol in an area will only ensure stability for state government jobs. That alone will not support a metro area. You need other industries. Look at Harrisburg PA. That place has seen better days.
Albany was not chosen as a lone tech valley. All upstate cities were chosen as new locations for "tech" industries in the early 2000s. The capital region just had more success. Rochester is connected to Toronto, a major metropolitan area.
With all that said, both places are great, just wanted to point a few things out.

And what is the hype about Wegman's?? Someone else was bragging on that place; I have never known any other town to brag on their grocery stores? This place must be special...it has everyone giddy.

Rochesters a awesome place to live !!!! The park Ave erea is unlike any neighborhood in any other city in NY ecept for the Village in NYC. There is so much to do in Rochester. The lilac festival, East end Fest, Park Ave Fest, Clothesline Fest, The Jazz Fest, Music Fest ext. Not to mention we have Lake Ontario, and a marine sort of atmosphere. Buffalo or Saracuse doesn't even come close to what Rochester has.
Niether does Albany !!!! Move to ROC BABY!!!!!!!!

As far as I'm concerned, Besides NYC, Rochester would be the only other place I'd live in New York State. All of our music and Arts festivals, The Lake and Finger Lakes, and all the laid back people here, just makes it a great city.

Hahaha!!! I live in Albany and work for a company based in Buffalo which also has Wegman's. On numerous occasions I have heard raves about Wegman's from my Buffalo counterparts??? I just wanna scream "It's a freakin grocery store!!! Get over it!!!"

I was just looking for an honest answer...what is the deal with Wegman's? I just think that bragging on a grocery store is a very telling charecteristic. If Rochester folk are impressed by a Grocery Chain....the bar is pretty low. Just my opinion. I'm sure Rochester is great...I'm not trying to diss it at all. I just want to vote for Albany because it is further east, more New Englad...more connected.

Yeah, Wegmans is just a grocery store, but it's a good one -- I wish we had one by us. I think a lot of the hype is that a year or two ago it was picked as "the best company to work for in America" by Fortune or Newsweek or whatever magazine it is that does that survey.

BTW, I agree with you about Albany -- Rochester's OK, but Albany has the more central location to "the rest of the world . . . "

I get it now...its not so much the selection of fine meats and cheeses as it is the quality of the employment. This must be the diversification of the economy that some other members were speaking of. I'll have to check one out the next time I travel westward.

Wegmans is a great grocery store, and a lot more. It is difficult to explain rather than experience. Keep in mind the reaction from those in Buffalo, and they don't even have one of the top notch stores that Rochester has and they have been building throughout the Atlantic region. I'd read this article from Forbes linked at the bottom I found quickly. Keep in mind it was 2003 and Wegmans has only gotten better since then. Make all the jokes you want, but in the flagship Pittsford store...no joke...tour buses bring groups to see the store and international supermarket executives make frequent stops and study the store. They even have their own upscale restaurant attached to the supermarket. Now don't get me wrong, there is a lot more to Rochester than just Wegmans, but that is the topic at hand.
