Default Dealing with snow

Makes you wonder how people 100 years ago dealt with this situation in that area. By the way isn't Mexico/Parish not far from the Renassaince festival in Sterling? And to think I used to brag about the big snowstorm in Rochester where we got 38 inches in one night back in 1999!

They're a little more than a half hour away.

Sterling is in Cayuga County near Fair Haven and west of Oswego by about 20minutes. Mexico is east of Oswego by 18 miles and Parish is beyond that just off Rt 81, the road that goes from Syracuse to Watertown. Oswego County is pretty large and runs from the SE corner of the lake up halfway along the eastern shore, then to the foothills of the Adirondacks.

I don't really know how much anyone else gets as we don't travel that much in the winter. You never know whether you're going to be able to get all the way home safely and you can't tell how bad it is till you've passed the county line at which time you could be in trouble quickly. I was blown away when a friend of mine told me Chicago only gets about 60 inches a year. We can get 200" in a bad year and then the majority of it's likely to fall between Jan 30th and Feb 15th.

Here's this weekends picts.

The first one is of the downtown grocery store at one of the main intersection. If you look close enough you can see the roof of the building to the right and below the top of the bank. Someone spray painted an ad for snow plowing onto it.

Great Pictures, Thanks for posting them.

Have a question? at what point do you climb on to your roof to shovel the snow off?
1ft, 2ft of snow?

If you are my grandmother, 2 inches. Generally we used to when there was a foot or more. Since there is probably over 5-6 feet on most roofs, I bet everyone is shovelling theirs off.

As soon as you can find somebody to do it!

Two feet I'd say. It's not good to leave it. There's already been a couple of roof collapses in the county. It kind of melts down and turns into ice underneath which is a problem, not to mention adding more footage onto what's already there. The density of the snow is also a consideration. Sometimes it's fluffy and could blow away on it's own, other times it's closer to the consistency of cement. That's a pain.

Great pictures. Can we have some of that snow down here on Long Island? We are dying for a good snowstorm. It sounds like you are all dealing with it very well.
My Dad lives in Vermont and they "rake" their roof when there is a snowfall. Is that something you do?

I haven't noticed anybody raking their roofs. They called a state of emergency right away for the week which was a smart move because it kept cars off the road and allowed for a better cleanup.

You're more than welcome to come get any amount of snow at all you wish to have, if you take it home with you. We're running out of places to put it.

When Jim Cantore starting visiting your area, you know this is a big storm.

I'm starting to think that people who just moved to Upstate NY think this weather is "normal". I've never seen this much snow and cold we've had in the last month. It just keeps snowing and snowing with temperatures running 10 to 20 degrees below normal. My area went from virtually no snow until mid-Jan to more than average to date by mid-Feb. That means in month we had as much snow as we normally get over 3 months.

It's too bad because some people are probably scared away from living here because of this crazy winter.
