It was a very rare situation here, and a sad one. You have to feel for all the parties involved. Most of the city was surprised that he was charged (it took a couple of years for the DA to go after him - he'd even moved away), but imagine the young man's family. A tragedy all around.

Anyway....back to Saranac Lake and RET-FDNY's flower bed.

Default Belated thanks

By the way (& meant to do this before):

Although I've never lived in NYC--haven't even visited in 10 years--I do want to say a "Thank you" to RET-NYFD for his noble service. A good friend of mine is a local volunteer fire and EMT person, and he's saved a dozen lives in the past five years alone--and gone into some very dangerous situations to do it. It takes a truly courageous compassion to do something like this just once, much less perhaps every day.....

I have to second that. Thanks for bringing it up, Homeward B. I was afraid to embarrass him. I guess you shouldn't be afraid to offer your thanks to someone who puts his/her life on the line for complete strangers. I've thought about ret-fdny several times in the past couple of days and wish him and his wife the best in their life. They certainly deserve it.

ABSOLUTELY....damn you are so right. That should have been the first thing we all said!

And Homeward, when you get here, go to the shelters.....tons of great dogs just waiting for a home like yours. Indeed the snow brings the pup out in all of them, and in us It just makes you see everything through their eyes, though the dogs dod NO shoveling today, just romping through the 2+ feet (almost over their big football heads) Our old guy did not last long, but the young chick bunny hopped for hours as we labored.

And indeed Dobies are another great breed that on site appears scary but are actully very family oriented and sweet pups But, as you can tell, I think that about alot of dogs

RET-FDNY is on a distinguished road
Wow, did this thread ever light up!

Sorry if we got our signals crossed JUSTSAYNO. It is very noble of you to go the extra mile to help dogs that have been abused. You are right, some people shouldn't own dogs.....period.

We happen to own a Pembroke Welsh Corgi that we adopted from a woman who raised them to show and breed. She treated all of these Corgis as if they were her children, and the process we had to go through was similar to that of adopting a child, but we are glad we did. She happens to LOVE the snow, we can't get her back in the house when there is snow on the ground.

Thank you everyone for your kind words in thanking me for my service in the FDNY. I worked hard in that job for 26 years and it has in turn rewarded me. I had the pleasure of working with the finest guys that I will ever know. It will always be a apart of me, no matter where I go in life.

I have lived in and around NYC for my entire life and contemplating this move is very hard for me. My wife on the other hand has lived all over the country and has no problem with it. I am "Bronx Irish" ad she is "French Cajun", what a mix!

Its funny how I always dreamed of moving away from the NYC area to live in a community like this. These thoughts always drifted into my mind on some tough Harlem night tours and they were the light at the end of the tunnel for me. It really helped me get through the night. Now the opportunity is at my door step and I am wrestling with it....funny how that works

Don't get me wrong, I loved every place that I lived, but things are changing here (as they are everywhere). Most of the true New Yorkers are gone and the current mayor is trying to turn the entire city into a playground for spoiled yuppie brats (there I go again on the yuppies). These kids are basically the adult version of the ones HOMEWARD BOUND is referring to.

Most of NYC's infrastructure needed to sustain any type of industry is being torn down or turned into "trendy" theme bars. These spoiled little zipper-heads wouldn't have had the nerve to walk into these same neighborhoods when they were in their former state.

I love my beer (its in my heritage LOL) and yes, maybe we were a little "rough around the edges". But we adhered to an unwritten code, and that code was all about respect. This new crowd seems to have lost that.

Most of the real New Yorkers have already left Manhattan, and now the outer boroughs are changing as well. Don't get me wrong, it is still a great place to visit and there are still lots of good people around.

That is what I try to keep in my mind as I ponder this move.

Sorry for rambling on!

FDNY.....here is how we looked at our move (quick background-we are both born and raised LIers, did a 10 year stint in the big city, owned on LI for 11 years, and moved to the middle of nowhere in Delaware County, NY almost 1 year ago). We like you, saw the changes in the Metro area. We easily could have afforded to stay, or "buy-up" on LI, but the exact changes you mention along with the high-cost for low benefits on LI made us say about five years ago that we are otta there as soon as we can be. We looked at it like this, change is scary to some, exciting to others. But, staying in a place that does not make you truly happy, inside and out, is even scarier! Especially for someone like you, whom has worked so hard and given so much to others-you DESERVE to be happy and satistisfied from this day forward. Like us, you have no children, which really frees you up to make choices that impact you and your wife-not children and their futures and happiness (ie school districts and things to keep busy, active, good/crowd bad/crowd kidda thing).

So, it is exciting, scary, stressful, hard work (packing and moving is a bugger) but if you do your research and find that perfect place to give you as much as your heart and mind thinks you want, than the change is life-changing! YOu have thought and dreamed of "escaping" the Metro area for so long, don't let your practical side make you hesitate now

Life is so different out in "the sticks" and while it has it's own set of stresses and expenses it is wonderful if that kind of lifestyle floots your boat! It is a 180 degree change, and the peace and quiet and having deer and turkeys as neigbors, mowing the lawns, planting the gardens, collecting kindling, processing wood, plowing the SNOW, is all satisfying, great exercise, and invigorating every day! If you and your wife and your pup can be happy with these daily doings, pack your bags and get ready for the quiet life.

Indeed, do your research, get ready to sell what you have down there, and plan everything-include in your budget the equipment you will need to sustain yourselves up there (like a generator, lawn tractor, snow removal machine, log splitter, 4-WD vechicles-you should have two) and keep the dream alive

Thanks JUSTSAYNO, sounds like we have a lot in common.

I guess it will be hard to split from life long friends and be away from family. But on the other hand, it is only 5 hours away. We liked Saranac because of its small village atmosphere. The people all seem to care about each other.

New England has some really nice places, but some of the villages are a little too "antiseptic" for me. I have also encountered some VERY unfriendly people there.

We want a little seclusion, but also want to be in a community and around people. A place where you can take a nice brisk walk or a short drive to get a newspaper and cup of coffee. And yes, as far as splitting wood and owning snow removal equipment goes, we are ready for that. Nothing is better than sitting by the fire during a snow storm.

Add to that scene the following:

Your favorite significant other and a nice bottle of your favorite wine. Maybe some candles....you fill in the rest.

A bag of potato chips?...............Just kidding

(My wife would hit me on the head if she saw me type that!)

It doesn't get any better than that NOMORESNOW, but you will be missing all of that in Florida.

ACtually, I was thinking nachos, but what the hey! (Don't worry - your secret's safe with the 50,000 people reading the forum!)

Um...I'll be missing all of that about as much as you'll be missing the traffic in NYC.
