Opinions? Facts? Good place for a family, esp. in terms of:

-Stately/quaint housing
-Good schools
-NOT over-developed/overwhelmed by new construction
-Fairly intact old downtown
-Village green/center/square
-Cozy rather than gloomy feel

Also, what's the surrounding area like?

Thanks in advance for your views.

Canastota is not bad, but not that good either. It's very hard to say this without offending anyone....sorry if I do...but when I hear the word Canastota, I think "hickish". The people are nice and friendly, but just aren't too "with the times".

BTW, there is very little new construction, so you won't need to worry about that. The surrounding area is farms, the terrain is flat, but if you go south a few miles it gets hilly. Sorry, can't help you with the other questions.

Hope this helps.

Wink Misinformed

I grew up outside of Canastota in Clockville, which makes Canastota seem like New York City, ha ha. I do agree with you that it is hickish, but raising my own children in places like Phoenix, AZ and Las Vegas, NV...I long for the peace of mind that my children will not be harmed by any Joe walking down the street. It may seem quaint, but the way the world is today, cities like Canastota let us remember what life was like before the world turned ugly.

I have only wonderful memories of life there. We could go trick or treating to any home and not even think that we may be harmed in any way. I graduated from Canastota HS in 1976. Looking back on my school experiences and my own children's' I would rather have mine. I just think that if everyone grew up in a town like Canastota there would be alot less violence. I guess I would say, don't knock until you try it.

Peace to You and Yours,

Dawn Macias {McKinzie}

Thumbs up This 14-year old thread about Canastota

Is bumped!

I liked living in Canastota. Was there for 12 years. Great housing prices (so far this year). You can buy a very nice home for under $140,000.

Surrounded by very beautiful country. Took me exactly 35 minutes to drive to work. Worth the commute time because the trip was all NYS Thruway, so easy on the car, and you could relax away from Syracuse's crime.

^I’m surprised that this wasn’t moved to the Syracuse forum. Yes, it is a solid town known for its Italian population, Onion farms/industry(which was a reason for a migrant farm presence in the town which was initially Italian and later some black folk from the South) and the Boxing Hall of Fame. It isn’t too far from Turning Stone or Sylvan Beach. Schools seem to be ok/alright. Its Downtown is ok, but has a lot of potential. There are a few employers in the village as well.

I don’t what crime in Syracuse has to do with anything related to Canastota, but ok...

I commuted to work from Canastota to Syracuse for years. That's obviously related to Canastota. A lot of people I met there work or still work in other towns or closer to Syracuse and have to put up with a larger community's crime. I was robbed twice in a parking lot in Syracuse. I had my car keyed badly in Syracuse. I had to call police -- a lot -- in Syracuse to have drug dealers removed from my office lobby. So yes, driving home to Canastota enabled me to get away from that every night. That is why people generally settle in a community -- feeling safe is a huge perk. You should realize that the outside world is "related" to where you live, wherever you live.

No, my point was more about what does crime in Syracuse have to do with Canastota. I get that crime occurs in parts of Syracuse, as it is after all the 5th biggest city in the state. I'm just wondering what it had to do with Canastota itself.

I'd been there a good bit.

Few years ago when we was house hunting we looking at some houses there.

First off the downtown is dead. Pretty much nothing there. Its tiny so not like its full of crackheads and shooting. Just nothing, good or bad.

The older part of town has some old hones that was real nice back in the day. Pretty run down now. Could be fun to buy one and fix it up to live in but you'll never get your money back.

Lottsa meth. Like every where Upstate meth is king. They will steal everything not nailed down. So keep everything nailed down. I'd put anyone's chance of being victim of a property crime at 100% and a violent crime at about zero.

The newer part of Stoda is very nice. Houses here cost about what they cost anywhere else. Crime of any kind is gonna be near zero.

For shopping they have a Aldi's and a Tops. Couple pizza joints and gas stations. Thats about it. Nothing really there.

For work your looking at Oneida or Rome. Utica or Syracuse by Turnpike are also possible.

School ain't bad. Youngest daughter graduated from there so I was around it plenty. Maybe not the greatest but I had no concerns about it. It is strangly redneck over the rest of the area which is pretty redneck itself. Go figger.

Drugs are circulating in Oneida and Canastota due to small pockets of traffic that move out of Syracuse. That's been going on for 20 years at least. No charming small town in upstate NY is crime free now mainly due to the mobility of populations.

That's the one thing I've noticed about small town life in upstate NYS when compared to similar small towns in the downstate and NE areas. People in a community the size of Canastota, located as an example in the lower counties of New York by the Hudson River, will have the same tight knit communities and generations of home ownership. But those communities will be aware of what comes from outside via transient traffic. Upstate NYS communities seem to think that they aren't affected by the urban cores near them, and with Syracuse about 35 minutes away via the Thru-way, that's a very short commute and people involved in crime DO hook up with contacts in all these lovely "isolated" communities in CNY.
