Default Dreaming of Upstate NY

I’m currently living in northern NJ and love it. But the tax situation is getting worse worse every day. I could also use so more elbow room between me and my neighbors.
So I’ve been thinking about upstate NY. I know people in Tivoli and Germantown but thats way to “small town” for me. I looking for somewhere no more than 1 ½ hours from NYC, trains into the city would be a plus. I’m also looking for a progressive school for my kids. Any help would be great. I just need a starting point.

Thanks

Kingston might be a good place to start looking and work your way out from there. Good luck.

For a commute within 1 1/2 hours you'd have to stay within Orange/Dutchess Counties and closer. Taxes will vary depending on the age of the home and the home style you are looking for but I gather you are looking for a single family home. Older resale homes usually pull about $5K-$7K in taxes per year and newer or new homes are closer to $8K-$12K on average. Orange County also has trains that go into the city in addition to the possibilty of hooking into the new TZ bridge plans:

Minisink is a great place to live. The school disrict is great and it is a very safe place to live ask any realtor. The commute to the city is about 1hr 20min my husband commutes everyday. we are close enough to all the shopping in Middletown and in Pennsylvania and we border sussex NJ the highways are near by route 84 and 17. my home is listed the MLS is 415556 with prudential rand and the taxes are about 8,100. a year on 3.9 acres when people come up from the city they call it the resort look it up
