Want to move back to NY
We're looking to relocate back to NY but we'd like to move Upstate (originally from Brooklyn). We're not sure where to start though, what's the job market like now (I, Human Resources - He, IT). We would also like to know what the best place for low crime rate is (we have a 3 year old). We were looking at Rochester and Van Buren based on a few of the posts here but weren't sure if there were other, better areas. Oh, affordable housing is also a main concern (Vegas prices have gone through the roof in a matter of 3-4 years!). Thank you in advance for any information!

Again, I am biased but I truly believe that Rochester is the best area to live in Upstate NY. The job market (outside of manufacturing which is struggling with kodak layoffs) isn't too bad, but there's definitely room for improvement. Rochester's nicest suburb is Pittsford, east of the city. Very low crime, top rated schools in the country, very familiy oriented and fairly affluent. Taxes are pretty high, but the houses are very affordable. $200k can get you a really nice house.

I know. Especially Upstate NY. It just has an extremely homey feel, very strong sense of community there that can't be found in most places nowadays.

Haven't really spent much time in Syracuse... lol, infact, the only time I was ever there was when I drove through on my way to Lake George 12 years ago. From what I hear, it is fairly safe and has many nice areas. I know that it is currently the best Upstate metro for job opportunities.

Hi, i'minformed. Are you moving back to Rochester?
Do you know anything about Brockport? What's the city like such as employment oppts, crime and place to live...etc?
How's NC?

Yes, I am moving to Rochester. Brockport is sort of like a satelite city of Rochester. It's in the same county, and has a decent sized population, but isn't really a "suburb". Because the SUNY Brockport campus is there, it has a pretty big "college town" feel. Brockport is a very safe place, not much crime there to speak of. Most of the crime in Monroe County happens in some of the bad neighborhoods of the city of Rochester.
