Here's some good information about HS Sports Classification in the Plattsburgh area: NYSPHSAA Inc. - Participation Reporting
Section 7 is the section that covers the Plattsburgh/Adirondack area. For Football, they combine with Section 10, which is the area including St. Lawrence, most of Franklin County and Harrisville, a town in Northern Lewis County.
Check this website out for more sports info. in terms of size and Classifications: NYSPHSAA - Classification
As far as the schools up there, I would say that Peru has the best sports program. Saranac has good girls Basketball, as does NE Clinton. Football, Peru is a periennial state contender, with Beekmantown being pretty good. Plattsburgh is good at Boys Basketball. Not sure about Track and Field and Cross Country, but here's a place to check: The Press Republican - High School Sports
It looks like Plattsburgh's Seton Catholic is very good at Cross Country and Beekmantown is good at Track and Field.

Happymommee...Just happened upon this thread as I know you've posted over on the VT forum. Quick question...if you settle in P'burg, would you still be considering/doing the program at UVM/FAHC that you talked about in your VT questions? If so, be sure to crunch your numbers as the added commuting costs may make any cost savings by living in NY a moot point. If you are considering a similar program at SUNY, then great. Definately consider Plattsburg. However, IMO, it does not have the same "vibe" as Burlington, which I know you mentioned in the VT postings as a reason you liked Burlington. Nice town, just different. You really should visit before you commit if you can!
Plattsburger/Nununco (or anyone else) - are you aware of any commuter "pass" for the ferry that makes it cheaper? Just curious...we came over your way to Target yesterday and it cost $24 r/t for the ferry...havent been over that way in a while and was a little taken aback at the cost!

Ferry, etc.........
Yes, there is definitely a commuter book of ferry tix but I looked on the webpage and it isn't advertised, so don't know what the latest cost is. I have been buying them every few months for the past 4 years and you buy a book of 20 tickets and the cost (the latest cost I can remember) was 130 something...........As I said, not sure why it isn't posted but people that cross all the time always have the coupon books out and the coupons do not have an expiration date on them. Also, just on tonight's newscast, it was announced that there will no longer be a fuel surcharge tacked onto the cost of a ferry ticket. I think when fuel almost doubled in price they added the surcharge. You probably got hit with that as well.................
Also, agree that Pburgh and Bton are two completely different places. I actually wanted to live in Bton, but just couldn't afford the housing costs at all. The same 3 bedroom 2 bath house that was 120 here (city prices, cheaper outside the city) was almost 200 there, no matter what neighborhood we looked into. Another good point that you raised was living in Pburgh but going to college in VT. That is not something that anyone wants to do. The out of state tuition will absolutely kill someone who lives here and attends school in VT. I believe the tuition for some health care programs and just UVM in general is the highest in the country. I would really suggest that someone be sure and get all the numbers regarding tuition and DO NOT assume that if the programs are comparable, the costs are as well. Vermont has some great colleges........but if you are talking UVM or Middlebury or those types of schools, you have to pay huge. If it is a nursing program, chances are it may be possible to take some courses through Champlain College or Vermont Tech which is much cheaper, however is more competitive because there are more in-state applicants per school than say in NY where there are many more SUNY and community colleges in each area of the state. It's great to live here and work there (VT), but living here and attending an out of state school there defeats the entire purpose of trying to save money on housing costs IMO.

Off topic, but I've always thought a pedestrian ferry from downtown B'ton to downton 'Burgh would change both cities for the better. It's 19 miles, same distance as the NYC Hudson River boat from Wall Street to Yonkers, which is 45 minutes. Save time, save gas, integrate the region a bit.

Hi again!
No,if we lived in NY, I would go to school in NY. The costs of both programs are not even comparable. It's almost 28K a year to go in VT,where as only 10 or 11K in NY.
We really aren't sure what we're going to do. I've heard somereally good pros/cons for both states. And there are def things I like / dislike about both. So I really don't know.
We can't move until May or June,so ya'll may be sick of me by then because I'm sure I will ask 500 questions.
Thanks for all your help!

Totally agree on ferry!
There was a retired doctor at one time that really tried to push the bridge idea between the two cities, but of course funding was an issue then, and now that Wall Street is down for the count................NOT going to happen in my lifetime. The ferry idea is perfect though. I see so many more VT plates here and there are now Pburgh/Bton business combos..........Maplefields is opening, the Rt 9 theatre is a Vermont owned business and of course Target is bringing people over by the carloads, lots of courier services between the airport there and businesses here, and travelers, commuters, construction companies work here.......I don't quite understand why there cannot be a smallish ferry run more directly either. Does it have to do with the lake wave action? I mean the lake swells during a brisk north-south wind can be enormous and maybe the currect trajectory of the ferry blocks the waves somehow?
I still want a bridge and would be happy to pay a toll to have one that it more convenient to use............

I think the Grand Isle ferry would still have to run as that Route is a major east/west corrider for trucking in Northern New England and NY. The City of Burlington I'm sure would not allow/want all the tractor trailer traffic if the GI/Pburg ferry was eliminated in favor of a BTV/Pburg ferry, nor would I think the City of Plattsburgh would want that kind of truck traffic downtown (assuming thats where the ferry landing would be).
If there was any way (and $$$$$$) we could get a bridge built up at Grand Isle/Cumberland Point, now that would be awesome.

I'm not talking about replacing Grand Isle. I'm talking about supplementing it with a high-speed ferry for pedestrians and bikes (OK maybe motorcycles, too) from downtown marina to downtown marina. No trucks. No cars even. Walk to downtown, or grab a cab, or jump on the CCTA bus to the mall. Or maybe open up a car-share service ( http://www.carsharing.ca/). May not be possible in winter with ice (or on some big wave days), and probably couldn't happen without a subsidy. But then, neither could our existing highways

Gotcha...pretty cool idea. I doubt we'll ever see it happen though. IF it does, make sure Target provides a shuttle up to the mall
