West Point NY Area
Hi - I am planning to move to the West Point, NY area for a job at the US Military Academy. I am not real familiar with the area, but I know that there are quite a few small towns. I drove through Newburgh about a year ago and I was not impressed at all. I drove through the downtown area and it seemed really run down and not well taken of. Are there any suggestions as to where to look for a decent place? I would want to rent an apartment or condo. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Human Resourses Manager!!!
Why not give your future Human Resourses Manager a call... ...I am sure they can point you in the right direction....I would definately stay out of Newburg... ...tooooo many crime victims...you might even consider renting a Hotel room for a week or so...maybe you can find an efficiency unit...this will give you some time to look the area over...

Good friend of mine went to WP to be an Instructor, he chose Highland Mills. Cornwall is another nice area. If you don't mind a 30-45 minute drive, Chester/Goshen/Middletown(not city of) are nice areas as well.

West Point, Highland Falls and Fort Montgomery are all next to each other surrounded by mountains. If you want to get out of that area the closet to the south would be Stony Point or Tompkins Cove and Cornwall to the north.
You have Stony Point or Tompkins Cove to the south of West Point but rents would be higher there than Fort Montgomery and Highland Falls. (you also would be closer to Indian Point nuclear power plant if you care about such things).
You also have Cornwall to the north if you do not mind dealing with the Storm King mountain. Tough call but if you want to be close to work why not Fort Montgomery?

Maybe in bad weather. More like 10 - 15 minutes to Cornwall. Highland Mills would be a bit further.

My husband taught at West Point and we left a couple of years ago. Id say that a lot of people who work at WP who are civilians live in Cornwall/Highland Falls/Ft Montgomery/or Monroe. I dont think many people live south of WP since once you leave Ft Montgomery, there isnt too much for awhile. I wouldnt live any farther than Monroe/Goshen area. The closest to WP, the better..IMO because of the weather. Storm King is just scary in the winter.
Depending on what type of work you will be doing, classes go on regardless of the snow...so if you have type of position that the cadets will have to count on you being there....you WILL have to be there since they are always there.
WP is a fantastic place and one of the most beautiful places we have lived or ever been to. In fact, my husband is considering going back to teach again he loved it so much.
Good luck!

The USMA has a housing office...definitely contact them...as there are usually a listing of houses specifically developed for military and DOD civilians.
It is a nice area...if you can afford it you can get some fantastic views of the Hudson river.
