Default Where's it's peaceful

Looking to relocate / buy land / farm with a pol barn somewhere in upstate NY. We want to be close to NYC as the family is still there (3hrs max), but we had enough. Need lots of space for our Caterpillars / cars and projects. Some place not so stuck up and peaceful where no one will bother you if you want to put up a shed. Any ideas??

Try Sullivan or Otsego County. Very wide open and within that distance from NYC. You could actually go a little bit further up, if you like.

Depending on the price range, Dutchess is full of many beautiful farms where you would be right at home with the Cats. We have a Caterpillar Dealer right in town! H.O Penn

FWIW: I just sold 71 acres for $225k Though that is a bit low for the area. It was a nice piece of land with limited road frontage. We also have numerous car clubs up here.

Default Try Washington County?

Washington County is a bit farther than 3 hours, but it's just under an hour to the Northway with very little traffic. It's sort of between Lake George and Manchester, VT, and not far from Saratoga, so you'll have lots of summertime company!

The most beautiful farmland around - fantastic views everywhere - farm prices low, taxes eh, could be better, but that's NY for ya.

I have travelled the world and imho the only views comparable to what's here are when flying over the Italian Alps or over the Dead Sea.

Homeowner's insurance unbelievably low - under $600/year. I lived in Florida where ins. was $5k, so it was a trade-off between taxes and insurance.

Lots of artists, writers, restauranteurs, and farmers here.

The 92 acre farm next to mine is up for sale - huge house, guest house, several barns - original asking price $899, I think it can now be had for $600k.

My farm is 35 acres, 5 bdrm, 2 bath, huge country kitchen, screened summer porch, newer family room addition, detached garage with hot tub area, and a machine shed now outfitted with horse stalls.

I'm thinking of doing a lease/option on it, while I pursue a motel purchase in Schroon Lake - won't have time to run both!

People are very friendly here and always have time for you.

Good luck in whatever you decided to do!

You could also try Delaware county, especially the Western part.

Actually, just about anywhere away from the bigger cities would do. Things generally get cheaper the further North and West you go.
